Women's Tennis Chalks Up TwoApril 24, 2000 MILWAUKEE - MILWAUKEE-Indoor matches and time restrictions didn't stop the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team from tallying two victories over the weekend at Tri-State University. The Panthers defeated Oakland University, 5-4, on Friday and ousted MCC rival Cleveland State, 8-1, on Saturday.
Indoors Saturday, senior Kristine Miller (Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame) topped Kristi Mathews at No. 1 singles, 8-4, and sophomore Kate Laveck (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) defeated Jennifer Herrera at No. 6 with a score of 8-2. In doubles competition, Miller teamed with fellow co-captain Jamie Martin (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) for a fought-out 8-6 victory at the No. 1 spot. Junior Kaila Duff (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) and freshman Katie Martin (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) won, 8-5, at No. 2 and sophomore Julie Heling (Menasha, Wis./St. Mary Central) and Laveck came out on top at No. 3 with an 8-4 score.
Against Cleveland State, UWM won five of six singles matches to seal the victory. Miller tallied a convincing victory over Fatima Martin at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, and freshman Molly Caulk (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic), Jamie Martin, Katie Martin, and Laveck all won at their respective slots at No. 3, 4, 5, and 6 singles. Caulk and Katie Martin took their opponents to three sets for the win. All three doubles teams won with Miller and Jamie Martin leading the way with an 8-0 victory at No. 1.
UWM increased their dual meet record to 7-8 on the season with the victories. The Panthers are next in action as they take on the MCC at the Championship meet April 29-30 at North Central High School in Indianapolis, Ind.
