Panthers wind down first season under Matt McCaskill

April 19, 2005

Tournament Bracket

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team winds down its 2004-05 season by heading to the Horizon League Championships in Indianapolis this weekend.

The Panthers, who are seeded eighth in the event, open competition Saturday morning against top-seeded UIC. The match begins at 9 a.m. at North Central High School.

The eight-team event continues through Sunday, with the champion receiving an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships.

UWM fell to UIC, 7-0, during the regular season and hasn't beaten the Flames since 1991. The Panthers will also be looking for their first league tournament win since 2000.

But, while UWM has not claimed a team match win this season, things seem to be on the right track for the Panthers. They have shown marked improvement under coach Matt McCaskill, who took over just in time to lead the Panthers through their spring season.

In recent weeks, UWM has made great strides in its doubles play. In fact, the Panthers won the doubles point in two of three road matches this past weekend. Meanwhile, in singles play, Erin Felber has claimed three wins in the spring while Traci Litscher has two wins.

Win or lose in the opener with UIC, UWM will play at least one more match at the league event. The Panthers will either play the winner or loser of the match between fourth-seeded Cleveland State and fifth-seeded Wright State later in the day Saturday.
