Panthers Close Out Home Schedule With UICApril 14, 2004 MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team is coming off a disappointing, 6-1, loss to Horizon League rival Wright State on Saturday. The Panthers look to regroup, as they will host their final home match of the season against league-leading Illinois-Chicago Saturday at 1 p.m. The Week Ahead The Panthers will wrap up the regular season this weekend at home against Horizon League leading UIC. UIC currently owns the league's best record with a 6-0 (11-7 overall) mark. The Flames are looking to continue their impressive streak of consecutive championships, closing in on number eight. Scouting the Opponent UIC continues to dominate Horizon League women's tennis, as the team is en route to cap off its eighth consecutive season as league champions. The Flames have yet to drop a league match this season and boast a league best 11 wins. Paving the way for the Flames this year has been the impressive play of their top three singles players. Beatriz Cabrera, Ayca Gumuscu and Iris Jaklin have collectively garnered an 18-0 league record. Cabrera was recently recognized alongside Panther junior Erin Felber as one of the week's "Top Performers" for the week of April 8th. The Week in Review The Panthers fell to Horizon League rival Wright State on Saturday, 6-1. In a match that featured two teams fighting for their first league win, the Panthers were unable fight off the Raiders. Claming the only win on the day for the Panthers was senior Cassie Kuranz. After enduring a close first set match score of 6-4, Kuranz won here second set convincingly, 6-1 over Carla Haun. "Cassie continues to play well," head coach Erika Wentz said. "She played really smart." Tourney Time After closing out the regular season this Saturday, UWM will head to the Horizon League Tennis Championships in Indianapolis the following weekend. The Panthers will join the other seven league schools with women's tennis teams at the two-day event on the campus of North Central High School. A Place to Call Home The spring schedule marks a welcomed change for UWM tennis, as the team is hosting a school-record seven home matches at the Highlander Elite Fitness and Racquet Club in Brookfield. Head coach Erika Wentz calls the Highlander one of the premier racquet clubs in the Milwaukee area. The team will continue to practice at the North Shore Elite club in Glendale. That Senior Spark As UWM's lone senior, Cassie Kuranz is looking to continue her success in her final campaign. Kuranz currently has a team best seven victories. Finding Success in Doubles The Panthers continue to perform well in doubles action. The tandem of Tammie Spiel and Megan Brown has won four of their last seven matches, including an 8-4 win over the duo of Wood/Cain from Bradley. The pair has a team-best 5-8 record this spring. UWM junior Erin Felber collected wins in both singles and doubles play two Saturdays ago against Detroit. The Nicolet graduate became the second Panther this season to accomplish the feat.
