Tennis Team Heads To Cleveland

UWM looks to pick up season's first win against Vikings

April 3, 2002

MILWAUKEE - The UWM tennis team hits the road this week to play a single match at Cleveland State on Sunday. The Panthers are coming off a pair of losses to league foes Detroit and UIC last weekend in Milwaukee. The Panthers fell to the Titans, 6-1, before being shut out by the Flames on Sunday, 7-0.

Cleveland State Series Notes: UWM leads the all-time series against Cleveland State, 9-3, and has won three straight matches against the Vikings. The two schools met three times in the 2000 calander year, with UWM taking all three meetings. This will be the Panthers' first trip to Cleveland since the 1998-99 season.

More Notes On The Vikings: Panther head coach Erin Grambow got her first collegiate win as a head coach last year against the Vikings. The Panthers also hold more wins over Cleveland State than over any other Horizon League opponent.

Last Time Out: UWM fell to league rivals UIC and Detroit last weekend in Milwaukee. The match against Detroit was the first time this season that the Panthers won at least one game in every set. The Panthers then fell to two-time league champion UIC. Tammie Spiel played well against UIC, taking three games from UIC's Nicole Derouin, who was named to the all-league team a year ago.

An Eye On The Record Books: Freshman Megan Brown is one win away from giving the Panthers three straight seasons with at least six wins by a freshman. Cassie Kuranz had six a year ago in her first season, and Molly Caulk won nine matches in her freshman year. The most wins by a freshman in UWM's Division I history is 14, set by Tori Whitlinger in 1994-95.

Up Next: The UWM road trip continues next weekend with single matches against Youngstown State on Sat., April 13 and Chicago State on Sun., April 14.
