UWM Set To Open League PlayMarch 27, 2002 MILWAUKEE - The UWM tennis team will welcome UIC and Detroit to Milwaukee this weekend as the Panthers open Horizon League play for the spring. The Panthers will face the Titans on Friday at 10 a.m. and the Flames on Saturday at 4 p.m. Both matches will be played at Pleasant Valley Tennis Club in Jackson, Wis. The Panthers will be looking to rebound after losing three matches last weekend in Texas. UIC Series Notes: The Flames lead the all-time series, 11-2. UWM took the first meeting between the two schools since UWM has been a Division I program before the Flames won six straight times. UWM's last victory was on Sept. 23, 1995, when the Panthers were victorious in Chicago. Detroit Series Notes: UWM and Detroit have met nine times since the series began in 1995, with Detroit taking six of those nine meetings. The Titans have taken the last four meetings, with the last Panther victory coming on Sept. 22, 1996. Last Time Out: UWM lost three matches in Texas last weekend, falling to Texas-Pan American, St. Mary's and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Panthers lost all three matches by a 7-0 count, though several Panthers did take their opponents to three sets. Spring Break Numbers: With the Panthers making their first-ever trip to Texas, UWM faced three opponents for the first time. The Panthers are 23-31 when meeting an opponent for the first time. The three losses on the trip bring the record on spring break trips to 8-17. UWM's best spring break trip came two years ago, when the Panthers went 3-1 in Arizona, beating Montana State-Billings, Hamline and Mills College after opening the trip with a loss to Connecticut. Welcome Back: Returning to action for UWM in Texas was freshman Megan Brown, who had been sidelined for several weeks due to a bout with mono. Brown, who has led the team in wins all season, played in two of the three matches in Texas.
Up Next: The Panthers will hit the road next week for a single match against Cleveland State on Sun., April 7.
