UWM Tennis Wraps Up Successful Spring Trip

Panthers close out travels on high note

March 27, 2001

MILWAUKEE - The UWM tennis team went 3-2 on its five-match spring trip, and the Panthers are now preparing for the final month of the regular season.

"It was a great week of tennis for the team," coach Erin Grambow said. "We got to see a variety of tennis players and styles. The level of competition was also very good, and we showed some great team spirit to pull out some close matches."

After falling to Millersville 7-0, the Panthers rebounded with an impressive 4-3 win over Barton. UWM dropped three of the first four singles matches, but Cassie Kuranz and Jackie Groehler each won their singles contests to pull UWM even heading into doubles. After dropping the first doubles match, UWM won the last two to claim a 4-3 victory.

Southeast Missouri State, whom the Panthers will see again in two weeks, downed UWM 6-1, but the Panthers rallied in the final two matches of the trip. After dropping the first two singles matches to Fairleigh Dickinson, UWM won the last four singles matches to claim the win. In fact, UWM gave up just four points in the last three matches.

The Panthers closed out the trip at Savannah State, winning five of six singles matches and the point from doubles to claim an easy 6-1 victory.

"This was a great confidence builder for the entire team, especially as we head into our final month of competition and the conference tournament," Grambow said.

Jansen was one of the main standouts on the trip, going 5-1 during the week, including a match-deciding victory over Barton and two key wins over Savannah State. In the win over Barton, Jansen teamed with Julie Heling for a heart-stopping 9-7 victory in third doubles, giving UWM a 2-1 doubles advantage and the deciding point in a 4-3 win. Against Savannah State, Jansen scored an easy 6-0, 6-0 win in singles before teaming with Kuranz to claim an 8-4 win in doubles.

This week, UWM will play at Western Illinois Friday and Bradley Saturday.
