Panthers Head To Lone Star State

UWM Tennis to take on three teams this weekend

March 19, 2002

MILWAUKEE - The UWM tennis team will head to Texas this week for three matches during the school's spring break. UWM will take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, St. Mary's of Texas and Texas-Pan American at the end of the week.

Series Notes: The Panthers have never played any of the three schools they will face this week. In fact, UWM has never faced an opponent from Texas. The Panthers will also be playing their first-ever match in the state of Texas.

Last Time Out: UWM lost a pair of matches last weekend, one in heartbreaking fashion. On March 9, the Panthers lost to DePaul, who is currently ranked 74th in the nation and is ranked 10th among schools in the Great Lakes area. The March 10 match with Bradley nearly became the Panthers' first victory, but they fell, 4-3. UWM got three wins in singles play, as Tammie Spiel, Molly Caulk and Melissa Hackett each picked up a win. Julie Heling fell in three sets after winning the first set.

Spring Break Numbers: UWM has made previous spring break trips to Florida, Hawaii, South Carolina and Arizona. The Panthers have an 8-14 mark on spring break trips in the school's Division I history. Last year, the Panthers played five matches in Hilton Head, S.C., and went 3-2, beating Barton, Fairleigh Dickinson and Savannah State.

The Numbers Game: UWM entered the fall season with more depth in terms of numbers than ever before, and that depth has been needed in the spring. The Panthers are currently playing without two of their top players, Erin Felber and Megan Brown. Brown (mononucleosis) will be out at least until after the Texas trip, while Felber is done for the year after needing surgery on her foot.

Up Next: UWM returns to Milwaukee to open up Horizon League action for the spring. Friday, UWM plays host to Detroit at 10 a.m. at the Pleasant Valley Tennis Club in Jackson, Wis. UIC then visits on Saturday with a 4 p.m. match, also at Pleasant Valley.
