UWM Heads To Indiana For Weekend Matches

Panthers face IUPUI, Ball State

March 10, 2004

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team will travel to Indiana this weekend to face off against Ball State and IUPUI. The Panthers are coming off a heart-breaking 4-3 defeat against Bradley. The match consisted of three, three-set matches, but only two Panthers were able to pull out singles victories.

The Week Ahead

The Panthers will be traveling Indiana this week, as they will first play Ball State in Muncie on Friday. The team will then travel southwest to Indianapolis on Saturday to face off against IUPUI.

Scouting This Week's Opponents

Ball State is currently riding a 7-4 record. The Cardinals are led by senior Melissa Roach, who has a team-best 15-8 record playing in the #1 spot. Junior Jenny Batty has a respectable 12-9 record playing at the #2 position. Ball State has had some success this year against the Horizon League, defeating Youngstown State and Wright State.

IUPUI is now 3-6 coming off a 4-3 win to Eastern Illinois. The Jaguars are lead by Emily Dukeman and Alyssa Halcomb, who each have six wins. Senior Amanda Vlase has a 5-8 record playing both at the #5 and #6 singles spot. Brookley Crews and Mallory Stemle currently own a team-best 4-2 record playing doubles.

The Week in Review

The Panthers played host to Bradley University on Saturday afternoon. In a showdown that consisted of three, three-set matches, the Panthers found themselves one point short, falling 4-3. Playing the #1 singles, sophomore Margie Van Lieshout lost a close three-set match, 6-4, 4-6 and 6-2. "Margie played very well, even though she didn't get the win," head coach Erika Wentz said. Megan Brown also dropped a three-set match. After dropping the first set, 7-5, Brown came back to win the second set, 6-3. In the third set, however, Bradley's Kelley Wood took the decision, 6-1. Senior Cassie Kuranz continued her impressive singles play winning at the #4 spot in three sets. Kuranz downed Tori Robertson, 2-6, 6-3 and 7-5. Kristen Bauknecht collected the other singles point in the #6 slot thanks to her notable victory over Marissa Bianchi. Bauknecht won decisively in two sets, 6-3 and 6-4.

The Panthers received one team point as a result of winning two out of three doubles matches. Tammie Spiel and Megan Brown kept their remarkable season on track as they downed Bradley's duo of Wood/Cain, 8-4, in the #2 spot. Kristen Bauknecht and Melissa Hackett also collected a win. The team won a close match, beating Bradley's tandem of Bianchi/Robertson, 8-6.

Finding Success in Doubles

The Panthers continue to perform well in doubles action. The tandem of Tammie Spiel and Megan Brown have won four of their last five matches, including a 8-4 win over the duo of Wood/Cain of Bradley. With that victory, Spiel and Brown have a team best 5-2 record this spring. Melissa Hackett and Kristen Bauknecht also collected a win against Bradley, their second in a row. Playing the #3 doubles Hackett and Bauknecht won a close 8-6 match over Bradley's Bianchi/Robertson. "#2 and #3 doubles are continuing to do very well," UWM head coach Erika Wentz said.

That Senior Spark

As UWM's lone senior, Cassie Kuranz is looking to continue her success in her final campaign. Kuranz currently has a team-best 6-2 record playing the #6 singles.
