UWM Tennis Takes On Illinois RivalsMarch 6, 2002 MILWAUKEE - The UWM tennis team will host DePaul and Bradley this weekend as the Panthers resume action after a week off. Milwaukee was to have hosted Eastern Illinois on Sunday, but the match was cancelled due to inclement weather. The match with DePaul is slated for Sat., Mar. 9, at 6 p.m., while Bradley visits on Sun., Mar. 10, at 10 a.m. Both matches will be held at Pleasant Valley Tennis Center in Jackson, Wis. The Series With DePaul: The Panthers and Blue Demons have met twice, the last time in 1998. DePaul holds the edge in the series, having taken both matches. The Panthers hosted the first meeting of the two schools in Oct. 1991. The Series With Bradley: The two schools will be meeting for the fourth consecutive year, and the Panthers hold a 2-1 edge in the series. UWM won the first two matches, while Bradley took last year's meeting. In The Spring: UWM has played three matches already this spring, losing all three. The Panthers made up a match from the fall against UW-Green Bay, and also took on Valparaiso and Northern Illinois. Julie Heling got the lone win for the Panthers in the three matches, defeating her opponent in the match against Valparaiso. Freshmen Firepower: The four freshmen on this year's roster have accounted for all but two of the individual match victories for the Panthers this year. Erin Felber, Megan Brown and Tammie Spiel have compiled a 7-14 record in their first collegiate play. The fourth member of the freshman class, Melissa Hackett, is 0-1 in her only singles match. Senior Farewell: The Panthers will be playing this spring without senior Kate Laveck, who exhausted her eligibility in the fall. Laveck had teamed up with Tammie Spiel in No. 1 singles and had worked well together, only losing 8-6 to Western Illinois' top pairing, who had the benefit of several years' experience as teammates.
Up Next: The Panthers head to Texas for three matches over spring break. The Panthers will face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-Pan American and St. Mary's of Texas on Mar. 21-23. The rest of the spring season features the Panthers taking on Horizon League rivals Detroit, UIC, Cleveland State, Butler and Youngstown State, and will conclude with the Horizon League Championships in Indianapolis on April 26-28, 2002.
