Panthers Set To Open Home Slate
Feb. 14, 2008
MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team will play at home for the first time in the 2007-08 season when the Panthers host a pair of matches this weekend. Milwaukee will welcome Northern Iowa to the Paley Tennis Center Friday at 7 p.m. before taking on Butler Saturday at 5 p.m. in a Horizon League match. Then Sunday, UWM will make the trip across town to take on Marquette. The Panthers enter the weekend on a high note, having claimed wins over IPFW and Dayton this past weekend. Freshman Sammi Schoen was named the Horizon League Player of the Week for her efforts last Friday, as she claimed two key singles victories and a tight doubles win. UNI has won both of its spring dual matches so far, beating UMKC and Western Illinois. Sampada Kanade has led the Panthers through the early season, winning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week honors after posting a perfect record over UNI's first two matches of the year. Butler, meanwhile, will be looking to keep up its solid play in the Horizon League. The Bulldog women are 29-10 against league opponents over the last four seasons, including a perfect 4-0 mark against Milwaukee. Butler will also play Xavier and Green Bay on its weekend road swing. Marquette is off to a 1-6 start this spring but the Golden Eagles have faced a challenging schedule. MU will face Wisconsin, Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa before taking on UWM late Sunday.
