Feb. 13, 2008

MILWAUKEE - Freshman Sammi Schoen of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has been named the Horizon League's women's tennis player of the week.

Schoen helped the Panthers to a pair of tight victories last Friday, with UWM claiming 4-3 wins over IPFW and Dayton.

Schoen won both of her singles matches in three sets, with each win clinching the overall match for the Panthers. In fact, her victory at #4 singles against Dayton completed a UWM comeback from a 3-0 deficit.

Schoen also teamed with Ashley Schoneman for a doubles win in a tiebreaker, helping give the Panthers the key doubles point in the win over IPFW.

In all, Schoen was on the court for about eight hours in UWM's two victories last Friday.

Schoen is the first league honoree for the Panthers this season.

UWM returns to action this weekend, playing at home for the first time. The Panthers will face Northern Iowa at the Paley Tennis Center Friday at 7 p.m. before taking on Butler Saturday at 5 p.m. Sunday, UWM will make the trip across town to take on Marquette.
