Tennis Finds Success At Eastern Illinois

Freshmen Brown and Felber advance to semifinals in singles play

MILWAUKEE (Sept. 10, 2001) - In her first collegiate action, freshmen Megan Brown (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) advanced to the semifinals at No. 2 singles at the Eastern Illinois Tournament Sept. 7 and 8.

Brown defeated Amber Lenfert of Eastern Illinois in the first round and a player from Chicago State before falling to Mara Sonkin of Valparaiso in the semifinals.

The Panthers also had success in No. 3 singles, with freshman Erin Felber (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) also advancing to the semifinals with a pair of victories. She eventually fell to the bracket's champion, Monika Danko of Valparaiso.

Sophomore Cassie Kuranz also fared well in No. 3 singles. Kuranz rebounded after losing her first match to win 6-0, 6-0 over a player from Chicago State before losing in the semifinals of the consolation bracket.

In doubles play, the tandem of junior Molly Caulk (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) and senior Kate Laveck (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) defeated the team of Jill Carie and Karen Swanson of IUFW 8-5 before losing to Megan Fong and Kelley Wood of Bradley in the semifinals.

In No.2 doubles, freshman Tammie Spiel (Milwaukee, Wis./Muskego) and Brown teamed up to defeat a team from Chicago State in the semifinals of the consolation bracket.

The Panthers return to the courts this weekend when they travel to St. Louis for the St. Louis Tournament.
