The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming and diving team heads south for winter training in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. this week. The Panthers will open competition on their two-week trip at the Ed Kennedy Relays on New Year's Eve. Before returning home, the team will also swim at the Time Trial 100s on Jan. 4. Florida, Here We Come! As is with the annual tradition, the UWM swimming and diving teams head to Florida this week for two weeks of winter training. Like years past, the 2004-05 installment will feature competition at the Ed Kennedy Relays on New Year's Eve and at the Time Trial 100s on Jan. 4. The Panthers will be in the Sunshine State until Jan. 11. Last Time Out When Milwaukee hits the pool on Friday, it will be the first competition in almost four weeks, since the Notre Dame and Wheaton Invitationals, Dec. 2-4. At the UND Invite, sophomore Crystal Szymanski led the Panther divers with a second-place showing in the one-meter event, and was one of three UWM finalists from the three-meter board. Sophomore Lindsay Caldwell was the story as the swimmers competed at the Wheaton Invite. The West Bend, Wis.-native set three school records in the first 75 minutes of Friday's (Dec. 3) session to help the Panthers to a second-place finish at the meet. Record Breaker To say Lindsay Caldwell did well at the Wheaton Invitational may be quite the understatement. Just 75 minutes into the first night's session, she had broken three school records and was on her way to wins in all three of her events at the meet. She opened the session with a record time of 23.93 on the first leg of the 200 free relay. She then picked up wins in the 100 breast (1:04.69) and 100 free (52.05) with two more record times. In all, she had topped three school, two meet and two more pool records. While resetting her own 50 and 100 free times, Caldwell had also broken Amanda Chan's almost four-year-old 100 breast mark. In total, Caldwell now owns 10 school marks, including the 50 free, 100 free and 100 breast freshman standards, and is a member of four record-setting relays. Diving Depth And Domination One constant for UWM this season has been the strength and depth of its diving corps. The Panther divers continue to perform well, and the Notre Dame Invitation was no exception. After having just sophomore Crystal Szymanski make the eight-person finals of the one-meter diving, UWM put three divers in the three-meter finals, led by junior Erin Blemberg's third-place finish. Szymanski, who had taken second from the one-meter board, took fourth in her second event while freshman Jenna Kotlarz was also a finalist, taking seventh. Last Trip To Florida This marks the third straight year in which Milwaukee will be competing at the Ed Kennedy Relays, and second straight at the Time Trial 100s. Last season, UWM topped the field at both meets before returning home. The Kennedy Relays finish was a marked improvement over the fourth-place showing from the team's first trip in 2002. 2005 Horizon League Championships For the second time in four years, Milwaukee will play host to the Horizon League Championships at the Schroeder YMCA in Brown Deer, Wis. The last time UWM played host to the league meet was 2001, also at the Schroeder YMCA. UWM hopes history can repeat itself, as it won its only league title in 2001. Up Next Upon returning from Florida, the Panthers head to Valparaiso, Ind. for a dual meet with Valparaiso University on Jan. 16.
