Nov. 10, 2009
MILWAUKEE - Three members of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee swimming & diving team earned weekly honors from the Horizon League, the league office announced today. Senior Kerry Rossow, junior diver Kelsey George and freshman Nathan Welchlin helped Milwaukee earn three of the four weekly awards. The award is a career-first for Rossow and Welchlin and is the third for George, who repeated as league diver of the week. The UWM women's team has now won five of the nine accolades given out so far this season (Sarah Wardecke Oct. 13 / George Oct. 13 & Nov. 3). The men's team has picked up three of the eight (Dan Heraly Oct. 13 / Jake Koll Oct. 13). Rossow and George each recorded two first-place finishes to lead UWM to a quad-meet victory at UIC Saturday, also topping Butler and North Dakota. Rossow swept the breaststroke events, posting times of 1:05.75 and 2:22.21 in 100 and 200 races, respectively, to help earn her league swimmer of the week honors. She also claimed first-place against Wheaton College Friday in the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.58. She set season-best times in each event on the weekend. George recorded scores of 233.70 and 270.75, off the one- and three-meter boards, respectively. She has now recorded four individual victories on the season. Welchlin racked up two first-place efforts this past weekend in a triangular meet at UIC and against Wheaton College to earn league male swimmer of the week. The Overland Park, Kan., native touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly (vs. Wheaton) and 200 freestyle (UIC/North Dakota) races timing in at 50.92 and 1:42.41, respectively. His time of 46.82 in the 100 free (touched out by six-hundredths of a second for another win) earned him second place at UIC, while contributing a fourth-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 51:15.
