This week the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming & diving team returns to Chicago for the third time in two weeks to take on the University of Illinois at Chicago in dual meet action on Saturday (Nov. 6). UWM and its league foe hit the pool at 2 p.m. at the UIC Natatorium. A Look At This Week's Competition Milwaukee is quite familiar with UIC, as the two teams have been competing in dual meets since 1990, in addition to the annual league championships. The Panthers hold the decided 10-3 advantage in the series, having won the last five meetings. Last year, UWM won six events in picking up the 190-109 victory over the Flames and sweeping two more teams competing at the quad meet. This season, the two teams have seen each other twice before, competing at the both the Northwestern Relays and UIC Invitational on Oct. 24. The Panther swimmers edged UIC at the Relays (185-181), while the divers ran away with second place at the UIC Invite, as the host Flames took fourth. Last Weekend The Panthers picked up a win at home on Friday, before posting a 1-2 mark during a quad meet at Oakland to finish the weekend with a 2-2 record. Against Wheaton on Friday, sophomore Lindsay Caldwell led the way, winning the 50 freestyle and 200 breaststroke in addition to swimming with the first-place 400 medley relay, as UWM topped the Thunder, 110-95. On Saturday, junior Erin Blemberg shattered her career-best score in one-meter diving, narrowly missing the school mark, to win the event and lead the Panthers at the Oakland quad meet. UWM fell to the host Grizzlies (170-73), and Akron (162-81), but defeated Wayne State, 161-82. Dominant Dives In winning one-meter diving at UWM's quad meet with Oakland, Akron and Wayne State, junior Erin Blemberg blew away the competition and nearly dove herself into the Panther record books. Her score of 281.40 shattered her career best coming into this year, fell just 8.25 points short of the school standard and distanced her from second place at the meet by 22.35 points. She just missed Krystina Herzog's school record of 289.65, set in 2002, but improved her previous best by 53.90 (227.50). 2005 Horizon League Championships For the second time in four years, Milwaukee will play host to the Horizon League Championships at the Schroeder YMCA in Brown Deer, Wis. The last time the Panthers played host to the league meet was 2001, also at the Schroeder YMCA. UWM hopes history can repeat itself, as it won its only league title in 2001. Up Next UWM heads to Muncie, Ind., in two weeks for the Ball State Invitational (Nov. 19-20).
