Student-athlete's work in classroom recognized nationally

July 13, 2006

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women's swimming & diving teams were once again named to the list of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Academic All-America teams, announced recently by the organization.

The Panthers were one of four Horizon League schools to make the list on the men's side and one of four on the women's as well. The inclusion of each extends long established streaks for the UWM swimming & diving program.

In addition to the team honor, junior Lindsay Caldwell was named CSCAA Academic All-American Honorable Mention for the second-straight season. Caldwell had another fantastic year in the pool, earning Swimmer of the Meet and Swimming/Diving Athlete of the Year honors at the 2006 Horizon League Championships in late February. She won league titles in the 50 and 100 freestyle and finished second in 100 breaststroke, setting a league record in the 100 free and as part of four record-breaking relay teams at the event. She was nearly unbeatable, winning 30 of 35 races on the season, including a nearly four-month span where she won 26-straight times. She currently holds nine UWM and three Horizon League records.

The women have now been honored for 34-straight semesters with their 3.20 GPA this past spring semester. Wright State, Butler and UW-Green Bay also represented the Horizon League on the women's side.

For the men, Milwaukee earned the distinction for the 10th-straight semester, with its 3.10 GPA ranking 25th. The other league teams on the prestigious list included Wright State, Butler and UIC.

The lists, consisting of all divisions, were comprised of 416 teams from 252 institutions. At the NCAA Division I level, Georgetown led the way in the women's side with a 3.61 GPA. For the men, it was American University with a 3.48 GPA.

The team awards capped an impressive year for the student-athletes in the classroom. Six Panther swimmers/divers were named to the Winter Horizon Academic All-League Team and Caldwell recently earned Second Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District accolades as well.
