Three Panthers Earn Academic All-District Honors

May 22, 2003 MILWAUKEE - Senior Peter Clark and juniors Josh Baseheart and Sarah Caldwell have been named to the Verizon Academic All-District team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced today. Clark was named to the District V at-large first team, making him eligible for Academic All-America honors, while Baseheart and Caldwell were named to the at-large second team. "UWM swimming and diving has been recognized within our coaches organization for our academics for many years, so it's great to receive similar recognition from CoSIDA," head coach Dave Clark said. "To have three student athletes named to the all region team is absolutely fabulous. They have worked extremely hard in the pool and classroom to earn this recognition." Clark currently holds a 3.791 grade point average with another year of school before completing a degree in psychology and pre-medicine. He is a three-time member of the Horizon League Academic All-League team, along with being a three-time member of the league academic Honor Roll. In addition, he received the UWM Alumni Association's Herman Kluge Award, presented to UWM's top senior student-athlete, at the school's recent awards banquet. Clark finished seventh in the 500 freestyle and ninth in the 200 freestyle and the 200 butterfly at the Horizon League Championships. In his four years in the league, he placed in the top eight nine times. He is also a part of the school-record holding 800 freestyle relay team. Baseheart was selected to the second team with a 3.505 grade point average in computer science. He is a two-time member of the Horizon League Academic All-League team, and a two time member of the academic Honor Roll. He is also the school's only individual to ever earn academic all-american honors from the College Swim Coaches Association of America. Baseheart had one of the best seasons by an individual in school history, as he met the NCAA B standards in three different events, the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle. He was the Horizon League Champion in the 50 and 200 freestyle, and also finished second in the 100 freestyle. He is also the Horizon League record-holder in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles. Caldwell also made the all-district second team by carrying a 3.985 grade point average in biological science and pre-pharmacy. She is a two-time member of the Horizon League Academic All-League team, a two-time member of the league's academic Honor Roll and has twice won the UWM Athletic Director's award, given to the student-athlete with the highest grade point average among all UWM student-athletes. Caldwell finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke at the league championships in February, while also picking up a 10th-place finish in the 200 breaststroke and a 13th-place finish in the 200 individual medley. She has also finished in the top eight a total of three times at the league championship during her three years at UWM. Current UWM assistant coach Heather Czappa is the only other swimming student-athlete to earn Verizon Academic All-District honors in school history, earning that award in 1999. To be nominated for the Verizon Academic All-America Team, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his career.
