2005 Horizon League Championship Information

The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee women's swimming and diving team prepares to host the 2005 Horizon League Championships (Feb. 23-26) at the Schroeder YMCA in Brown Deer, Wis. The Panthers are in search of their first league championship since last hosting the event in 2001.

Last Year's League Championships

Lindsay Caldwell took second in the 50 freestyle, third in the 100 breaststroke and swam with three third-place relays to help the Panthers to a third-place finish at last year's League Championships. UWM was also deep in diving, placing four events among the top eight from both boards.

Last Time Out

Sophomore Katie Green won two events and junior Jessica Johnson repeated as 1650 free champion, to lead Milwaukee to a fourth-place finish at the Midwest Invitational last weekend, despite just six swimmers competing. Green was victorious on day one of the event in the 200 individual medley, before topping the 200 backstroke field on Saturday.

League Meet History

Milwaukee has taken third at the Horizon League Championships every year, but once, since 1998. The only year in that span UWM did not take third was its championship year of 2001. The Panthers have utilized consistancy and depth in recent years, as the team has not boasted a league champion since 2002.

Good Omens

A couple of good signs for the Panthers, heading into this weekend's league meet:

• Sophomore Lindsay Caldwell owns league-best times in the 100 free and 100 breaststroke this season, while Milwaukee has also posted the fastest 200 free relay time.

• The last time UWM hosted the league was 2001 at the Schroeder YMCA, the year it won its only league title.

Dominating Diving Duo

Divers junior Erin Blemberg and sophomore Crystal Szymanski have formed quite the formidable one-two punch for the Panthers. The duo have finished first and second five times this season, including from both the one and three-meter boards at UIC Nov. 6 and again Feb. 5 at UW-Green Bay. Each has won three events on the season, while Blemberg has eight second-place finishes and a third-place showing to her credit. Szymanski has been just as consistant, taking second three times and third six times.

Consistant Caldwell

With a win in the 50 free at UW-Green Bay Feb. 5, Lindsay Caldwell continued her successful season leading into the League Championships. With the win, she now has 15 on the season in 23 events, while never finishing lower than third. The West Bend, Wis., native has finished second six times and been third just twice.

2005 League Championships

For the second time in four years Milwaukee plays host to the Horizon League Championships at the Schroeder YMCA in Brown Deer, Wis. The last time UWM played host to the league meet was 2001, also at the Schroeder YMCA. UWM hopes history can repeat itself, as it won its only league title in 2001.
