Feb. 6, 2007

MILWAUKEE - Senior Lindsay Caldwell of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming team was named the Horizon League's Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today.

She was also named the Horizon League Swimmer of the Week earlier Tuesday.

Caldwell is the sixth UWM athlete, and third female, to earn the honor, which is in its first year and encompasses all sports sponsored by the league. Ginny Graczyk of the women's soccer team was the first to be named Sept. 20, followed by Billy Meier of the men's soccer team Oct. 10, Nick Hawley of the men's cross country team Oct. 17 and Sarah Moore of the volleyball team Nov. 21. Robby Leibold of the men's swimming team has been honored twice, Nov. 21 and Jan. 23.

Caldwell played a role in the Panthers' quest to upset reigning league champion University of Wisconsin-Green Bay last Saturday, winning the 100-yard freestyle (:52.16) and 200-yard freestyle (1:54.34). The 100 victory was her ninth in a row in that event. Caldwell also was a part of UWM's 400-yard medley relay unit that broke a Dorschel Natatorium record with a 3:55.21 time.

In the classroom, Caldwell boasts a 3.586 grade-point average, majoring in journalism and mass communications. She garnered Second-Team Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America and was an Academic All-League pick in 2006. Caldwell, also a two-time Academic All-America selection by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, was the Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet at each of the last two League Championships.

The Horizon League instituted the Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards for this academic year as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes.
