The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming and diving team returns home for just its second home meet when it hosts the Bill Ritter Invitational this weekend (Jan. 21-22) at the Klotsche Center. The Panthers are two-time defending champions of this annual meet. Bill Ritter Field This weekend UWM will host the usual cast at the Bill Ritter Invite. League foes Butler, UW-Green Bay and UIC are among the teams that have made the Ritter Invite an annual trip. Illinois State and Maquette's club team will also return this season. The field for the event has changed little over the years, as the participation of Northern Iowa in 2003 is the only deviation from this year's entrants since 2001. Diving will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 21, at the Schroeder YMCA (9250 N. Green Bay Rd.) Swimming begins on Friday at 4:30 p.m., while there are two sessions on Saturday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Swimming events are held at the Klotsche Center (3409 N. Downer Ave.) Last Time Out UWM won eight-of-13 events to roll to a 136-100 dual meet victory over Valparaiso Sunday in Valparaiso, Ind. With the win, Milwaukee moved to 4-4 in dual meets this season and has won 10 straight times against Valpo. Welcome Back Junior Julie Olson made a splash for the Panthers since returning to the team while in Florida. UWM's 100 and 200 backstroke record holder has won an event in each of her two meets with the team, while competing in just three individual events. At the Bob Mowerson Meet, she picked up the win in the 200-meter individual medley. On Sunday, she won the 200 back, while placing third in the 200 IM. Quick Study Competing in the first 200 IM of her career on Sunday, Lindsay Caldwell did not disappoint, coming away with one of her two wins on the day. Her time of 2:11.49 was the best by a Panther this season and is ranked fourth in the league. Bill Ritter History Milwaukee has found great success in its annual meet, winning championships in nine of the 13 years it has been held. Before its current two-year winning streak, UWM took second in 2002 to break a five-year winning streak. 2004 Bill Ritter Invitational In 2004, Lindsay Caldwell won three events to pace Milwaukee to a first-place showing at the Bill Ritter Invitational. The Panthers completed the two-day meet with a slight two-point advantage over league and state-foe UW-Green Bay (974-972). 2005 League Championships For the second time in four years Milwaukee will play host to the Horizon League Championships at the Schroeder YMCA in Brown Deer, Wis. The last time UWM played host to the league meet was 2001, also at the Schroeder YMCA. UWM hopes history can repeat itself, as it won its only league title in 2001. Up Next The Panthers' "homestand" wraps up when Western Illinois visits the Klotsche Center on Jan. 29 for a dual meet. UWM and WIU hit the pool at 2 p.m.
