Panther Women Sit In First Place After Day One At Wheaton Invitational

UWM leads field of seven teams in search of another title

WHEATON, Ill. - Looking for its third-straight title at the Wheaton Invitational, and fourth in five years, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming team jumped into the lead on Friday night with victories in two individual events and one relay. The Panthers have 449 points for a comfortable lead over second-place Grand Valley State, which has 315.

"I am very pleased with our first day of performances," UWM head coach Dave Griffore said. "We are right where we want to be and are looking forward to tomorrow."

Junior Molly Finn won the 200 butterfly, sophomore Kerry Rossow won the 100 breaststroke and the 400 medley relay team of freshman Ellie Gross, Rossow, Finn and senior Jess Kelly took first place as well.

Finn won the 200 fly in a meet record time of 2:05.32, which was also a season-best and just 31-hundredths of a second off the school record. She also took second in the 200 IM, recording a season-best time of 2:08.72.

Rossow led a one-two UM finish in the 100 breast, setting a meet and pool record with a season-best time of 1:04.48. Sophomore Shannon Berndt was right behind in second place, touching the wall in 1:06.08.

Other top finishers for the Panthers included a second-place effort by freshman Danielle Wenger in the 500 freestyle, finishing in a season-best 5:08.29. Freshman Kelsey Ogle was fourth at 5:10.37.

 

 

Kelly led the way for UWM in the 100 free, taking third with a season-best time of 53.60.

Milwaukee's 200 free and 800 free relay teams also both took second place.

The Panthers close out the weekend tomorrow, starting in the morning with preliminaries at 10 a.m.
