Team Effort Sends Milwaukee To Sweep Of Meet

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming & diving team defeated all three of its opponents on Saturday afternoon, topping UIC, North Dakota and Butler in a quad meet at the Klotsche Natatorium. The Panthers had six different individual winners and also won a relay in beating the Flames, 176.5-123.5, the Fighting Sioux, 199-101 and the Bulldogs, 254-39. "This is a great place for us to be right now," UWM head coach Erica Janssen said. "These are great wins all the way across the board. We lost some close races today but are training very hard right now and happy with where we are at." Senior Ashley Hall led the way by winning both diving events. Joining her on the list of winners was juniors Kerry Rossow and Bailey Nennig, sophomores Ellie Gross and Danielle Wenger, freshman Sarah Wardecke and the 400 freestyle relay team. Hall led a nice effort for Milwaukee on the diving boards, as her and junior Rachel Grimm each dove well. Hall won the one-meter board with a point total of 262.10, while Grimm placed second at 239.80. On the three-meter board, Hall led the way with 235.30 points and Grimm was third with 220.80. Rossow led the way in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:07.12. She also placed second in the 200 breaststroke, in 2:27.17.
Gross won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:56.38 and Wenger the 1000 freestyle in 10:31.31. Wenger also finished second in the 500 free in a time of 5:13.39. Junior Jenny Westfall was right behind Wenger, taking third in the 1000 free in 10:49.56 and third in the 500 free in 5:14.99. Nennig won the 200 IM in 2:12.78, with senior Molly Finn right behind in 2:14.07. Finn also placed second in the 200 butterfly and the 100 fly. Wardecke continued her nice freshman campaign, winning the 100 freestyle in 52.90 while taking second in the 50 free in 24.49. Freshman Danielle Chapman was second in the 200 back and also placed third in the 50 free. Milwaukee's 400 free relay team of Wardecke, Chapman, sophomore Kelsey Ogle and freshman Heidi Niespodzany placed first in 3:36.19 to top the field. Milwaukee hits the road for a busy weekend in Indianapolis, Ind., Nov. 14-15, swimming against IUPUI, Xavier and Saint Louis. |
