Nov. 2, 2007
WHEATON, Ill. - Junior Molly Finn and freshman Kelsey Ogle each won two events to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming team to a 137-68 victory over Wheaton College on Friday. The Panthers won eight of 11 events overall against the Thunder for their first win of the season. "It is always good to get that first win of the season," UWM head coach Dave Griffore said. "We have to be better though. We have been practicing well but not competing where we need to be. We are going to have to be better next week." UWM improved its all-time record against Wheaton, an NCAA Division III school, to 14-3. Finn posted her first multi-win meet of the season, topping the field in the 200 butterfly and the 200 IM. In the 200 fly, she won in 2:09.62, leading the way for UWM to take four of the top five spots. Freshman Amanda Nelson was second in 2:12.54, with junior Kelsey McDonough fourth in 2:19.61 and senior Briana Fergusson fifth in a time of 2:20.04. Finn also won the 200 IM, touching the wall in a season-best 2:11.22. Sophomore Bailey Nennig was right behind in second, also posting a season-best time of 2:14.46. Ogle paced the 200 freestyle for UWM, winning in a time 1:58.45. That was just enough to touch out junior Kristina Hansen, who had to settle for second in a time of 1:58.79. Sophomore Jenny Westfall gave the Panthers three of the top four in the event with a fourth-place effort, finishing in 2:02.63.
Ogle also recorded a victory in the 500 free, winning by almost five seconds with a season-best time of 5:15.99. Milwaukee had four of the top five finishers in the race, with freshmen Danielle Wenger (third in 5:23.43) and Suzy Paasch (fourth in 5:25.05) and sophomore Alex Nelson (fifth in 5:26.32) rounding out the list. Other winners for UWM included Wenger in the 1,000 free, sophomore Kerry Rossow in the 200 breaststroke and both relay teams. Wenger's time of 10:44.53 was nearly 10 seconds ahead of runner-up Paasch (10:53.91). Alex Nelson (10:59.05) was third and McDonough was fifth (11:14.21). Rossow earned her first individual win of the season with a season-best time of 2:27.66 in the 200 breast, with fellow sophomore Shannon Berndt third in 2:31.28. Freshman Ellie Gross swam well, taking second in both the 50 free (25.31) and the 100 free (54.73). Ogle, Gross, Nennig and senior Jess Kelly combined for the victory in the 400 free relay, while junior Kate Riebe, Rossow, Finn and senior Heidi Goetsch were the winners in the 400 medley relay. Milwaukee continues its season away from home Nov. 10, swimming at UIC, taking on the host Flames and Butler. |
