Cefalu finishes second in 200 breaststroke for day's highest finish

CLEVELAND - Kristin Cefalu finished second in the 200 breaststroke Saturday as the Panthers finished third at the 2003 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships in Cleveland. Cefalu led three Panthers in scoring in the event, though it marked the first time in the past three years a Panther had not won the event.

Cefalu finished in a team-season-best time of 2:21.98, followed closely by Amanda Chan in third place in 2:23.58. Rachel Smith finished eighth in the event in 2:27.97.

Milwaukee had four divers score in the top eight for the second time in the championships, led again by Hannah Burgard. Burgard was third on the 1m board, scoring 222.05 points. She was followed by Erin Blemberg in fifth with 203.25, Becky Rubel in sixth with 201.85 and Krystina Herzog in seventh with 201.20 points.

Sarah Walby and Jen Kedinger also teamed up to give the Panthers another pair of scorers in the women's 1650 freestyle. Walby set a new school record for 1000 yards on her way to finishing sixth in 17:53.15, while Kedinger was seventh in 17:56.08. Kari Kinney and Beth Watt also joined the double scorers, with Kinney finishing fourth in the 200 butterfly in 2:09.59 and Watt finishing seventh in the event in 2:13.05.

Patricia Frank and Nicole Rosinski joined in the scoring, with Frank finishing fifth in the 200 backstroke in 2:09.45 and Rosinski sixth in the 100 freestyle in 53.82. The women's 400 freestyle relay team of Kedinger, Sarah Caldwell, Watt and Rosinski also finished fifth in 3:38.81.

 

 

Wright State collected the women's title, scoring 779.5 points. UW-Green Bay was next with 738, followed by UWM with 654. UIC was fourth with 440 points, Cleveland State was fifth with 307, Butler was sixth with 244 and Youngstown State was seventh with 230.5 points.
