Swimming and Diving Championships Final Preliminary Round Ends

CHICAGO, Ill. - The final preliminary round for the 2004 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships have concluded and the table is set for the finals. Every point will count as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee swimming and diving program look to push higher in the standings. The women currently sit in third (434 pts.) and the men are in fifth (332 pts.). Despite the team standings, the Panthers will take their best shot in the finals and will have plenty of athletes to help out. For the women, Julie Olson (2:07.53) and Patricia Frank (2:08.94) qualified for the finals in the 200-yard backstroke by finishing third and seventh. Sarah Caldwell (2:28.77) will pace the way in the 200-yard breaststroke finals after finishing eighth to qualify. Kari Kinney (2:09.09) and Heather Sawatzki (2:11.37) will swim for the 200-yard butterfly championship for the women after finishing first and fourth. Emily Holcomb, Lindsay Caldwell, Bridget Fargen and Breanna Ballweg will all swim for consolation championships for the women. Holcomb (2:12.60) will swim in the 200-yard backstroke, Lindsay Caldwell (53.98) and Fargen (54.51) will swim for the 100-yard freestyle and Ballweg (2:13.56) will swim in the 200-yard butterfly.
For the men, Josh Baseheart (46.20) and Adam Steffes (46.68) finished in sixth and seventh-place for the 100-yard freestyle to qualify for the finals. Ryan Frohmader (1:55.98) will appear in the finals for the 200-yard backstroke after finishing sixth. Kyle Fyock (2:08.13) closes out the list of Panther finalists by finishing sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke. Justin O'Keefe (1:57.22), Matt Howard (2:01.06) and Carey Kammel (2:05.25) will represent the Panthers in the consolation championship in the 200-yard backstroke. Tim Watt (47.82) will appear in the consolation finals in the 100-yard freestyle and Rob Vergeer (1:54.84) will swim for the consolation championship in the 200-yard butterfly.
The finals for the league championships will kick off at 2 p.m. with the men's 1-meter diving to lead things off. Panther sophomore Jeff Jasinowski will be appearing in the finals for diving. The rest of the swimming finals will resume at 6 p.m. at the UIC Natatorium. |
