Chan takes fourth in 100 breaststroke for day's top finish

CLEVELAND - Amanda Chan took fourth place in the 100 breaststroke to pace the Panthers on the second full day of competition at the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships Friday in Cleveland. Chan led three Panther finishers in the top eight in the event.

Chan's posted a time of 1:06.93 to finish fourth, and was followed by Kristin Cefalu in fifth with a time of 1:06.94. Sarah Caldwell was the third finisher in the top eight for the Panthers, coming in seventh in 1:07.54.

UWM slipped a spot in the overall team rankings on Friday, finishing the day in third place behind Wright State and UW-Green Bay. The Panthers have 408 points, trailing the Raiders' 540 and Green Bay's 485. UIC is in fourth with 293 points, with Cleveland State in fifth with 198, Butler sixth with 176 and Youngstown State in seventh with 150 points.

Danielle Bradley and Cefalu combined to finish seventh and eighth in the evening's first individual event, the 400 individual medley. Bradley was seventh in 4:44.08, while Cefalu was eighth in 4:46.56. Beth Watt joined in the scoring with a seventh-place showing in the 100 butterfly in 58.96, while Sarah Walby also posted a seventh-place marker in the 200 freestyle in 1:57.05. Patricia Frank rounded out the top finishers for the Panthers in individual events, finishing sixth in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.43.

The women's 200 medley relay team of Frank, Caldwell, Watt and Rosinski also had a spot on the awards stand, finishing third in 1:50.41.

The competition concludes tomorrow with preliminary heats beginning at 10:30 a.m. EST. The finals will begin at 6 p.m. EST.
