CLEVELAND - The UWM women's swimming and diving team stands in second place after the first six events at the 2003 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships in Cleveland. The Panthers trail Wright State by just 12 points heading into Friday's competition.

Hannah Burgard had the top placing for the Panthers, finishing second in the 3m diving competition. Burgard scored 405.55 points, as four Panther divers finished in the top eight. Krystina Herzog was fourth with 396.00 points, followed by Erin Blemberg in fifth with 389.70 points. Becky Rubel finished seventh with 384 points, giving the Panthers a total of 58 points in the diving competition.

Jen Kedinger and Sarah Walby gave UWM another pair of top-eight finishers in the 500 freestyle, with Kedinger finishing fourth in 5:08.29 and Walby winding up seventh, posting a time of 5:10.38. Kari Kinney added a seventh-place finish in the 200 individual medley, finishing in 2:12.77, while Nicole Rosinski was eighth in the 50 freestyle in 25.02. The women's 400 medley relay team of Emily Holcomb, Beth Watt, Kristin Cefalu and Rosinski also placed third in 3:59.39.

The Panthers have 207 points, just 12 behind Wright State's 219. UW-Green Bay is a close third with 204 points, while UIC stands fourth with 157 points. Youngstown State is fifth with 92 points, followed by Cleveland State with 91 and Butler with 77.

 

 

The championships continue with preliminary heats beginning at 10 a.m. EST Friday. Finals in tomorrow's events will begin at 6 p.m. EST.
