Strong Prelimary Round Sends Five Panthers To Finals

CHICAGO, Ill. - The prelimary round for day two of the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships has wound down Thursday afternoon at the UIC Natatorium. At the end of the round, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panther have made sure they will have their fair amount of swimmers in the finals and consolation championships.

Leading things off, Jen Kedinger qualified for the 500-yard freestyle finals with her third-place finish (5:07.86). Emily Holcomb (5:16.44), Amanda Schmitt (5:17.12), Susan Harmsen (5:17.66) and Cathy Honeyager (5:17.72) will battle it out with four other swimmers for the 500-yard freestyle consolation championship. On the men's side of the event, Michael Belting, who set a school record in the 1000-yard freestyle Wednesday night), placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (4:39.09) to qualify for the finals. Freshman Dana Elzea (4:49.22) will swim for the consolation championship.

The second event on during the morning was the 200-yard individual medley. Kari Kinney led the way for the Panther women by placing sixth (2:11.37) to ensure herself a spot in the finals. Patricia Frank (2:12.08), Heather Sawatzki (2:13.34), Danielle Bradley (2:14.51) and Sarah Caldwell (2:14.79) will cover half the competitor's list for the consolation championship. For the men, Kyle Fyock (1:57.73) will pace the men for the consolation championship.

 

 

Closing out the morning, the Panthers ended on a high note in the 50-yard freestyle. Josh Baseheart led the men to a second-place finish (20.71) and will head for the top spot and a possible NCAA "B" cut time (qualifying time is 20.33). Adam Steffes (21.54) and Ben Creydt (21.93) will compete for in the consolation round. Lindsay Caldwell will represent the Panther women in the finals for the 50-yard freestyle by placing third (24.16) in the preliminary round. Freshman Bridget Fargen (25.42) will compete in the consolation round.

The meet will start back up with women's 1-meter diving finals set to start at 3 p.m. The Panthers will have Hannah Burgard, Crystal Szymanski, Becky Rubel and Erin Blemberg diving for the championship. The finals for this morning session will fire back up at 6 p.m.
