Panther Women Fall At UW-Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Panthers swept the diving events and sophomore Lindsay Caldwell won the 50 freestyle, but it was not enough, as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming and diving fell at in dual meet action, 135-106, at UW-Green Bay Saturday afternoon in Green Bay, Wis. With the loss, UWM falls to 5-4 in dual meets this season, while the Phoenix remained perfect at 8-0.

"It's one of those things, we are starting into taper time and everyone is at a different stage," head coach Dave Clark said. "We got good swims from some of our people, and others struggled, but everyone has the same goals for the end of the season."

Junior Erin Blemberg and sophomore Crystal Szymanski went one and two in each diving event, with Blemberg taking top honors in the one-meter event and Szymanski taking first from the three-meter board. In one-meter diving, Blemberg tallied 250.42 points to edge Szymanski (248.55). It was equally as close in the three-meter event, as she finished with 246.45 points, just ahead of Blemberg with 244.15.

"(Erin and Crystal) are two of the top four divers in the league on a consistant basis," Clark said. "It is nice to have that kind of depth where either of them can win on any given day. It is also nice to know that when one wins, the other takes second."

In her only individual event of the day, Caldwell touched the wall in 24.77 for the win. She also swam with the first-place 400 freestyle relay, which posted a time of 3:39.42. Caldwell was joined in the event by fellow sophomore Bridget Fargen and freshmen Jessica Kelly and Kristin Skiba.

 

 

Fargen also posted a pair of second-place finishes on the day, in both the 100 and 200 free events. In the 100 free, she finished in 55.58, just ahead of Skiba in third in 55.61. Fargen completed the 200 free in 1:59.57, slightly edging another teammate in third in sophomore Susan Harmsen (1:59.89).

Milwaukee had a nice showing in the 500 free, while junior Julie Olson was among the top three in two events. Senior Cathy Honeyager stayed hot as of late, taking second in 11:02.96, while freshman Emma McKeith finished third in 11:11.66. Olson posted a second-place showing in the 200 backstroke in 2:13.25 and third-place finish in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.80. Junior Patricia Frank finished behin Olson in the 200 back, taking third in 2:13.67.

UWM has next weekend off before competing at the Midwest Invitational, Feb. 18-19, in Wheaton, Ill. The meet will be followed by the 2005 Horizon League Championships, which are scheduled for Feb. 23-26 at the Schroeder YMCA in Brown Deer, Wis.
