Women's Swimming Takes Second At Mowerson Meet

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Junior Julie Olson, competing at her first meet of the season, won the 200-meter individual medley to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming team to a second-place finish among Division I teams at the Bob Mowerson meet Thursday afternoon in Ft. Lauderdale. The Panthers scored 255 points, but were edged by Central Connecticut State University with 269. Boston University rounded out the field with 232.

Olson finished first in the 200-meter IM with a time of 2:36.59, edging sophomore Heather Sawatzki for top honors. Sawatzki was second in a time of 2:37.39. Sophomore Lindsay Caldwell also had a good meet, taking second in the 100-meter freestyle, just 0.01 seconds off the all-division top time. She placed second in the Division I heat in 1:02.36, ahead of freshman Kristin Skiba in third place with a time of 2:37.39.

Sophomore Susan Harmsen and freshman Briana Fergusson also posted second-place finishes for Milwaukee. Harmsen touched the wall in the 4:50.29 in the 400-meter freestyle, ahead of senior Cathy Honeyager in third with a time of 4:56.27. In the 50-meter butterfly, Fergusson swam a time of 31.22.

UWM also got third-place showings from sophomore Katie Green and freshman Heidi Goetsch. Green touched the wall in 34.37 in the 50-meter backstroke and Goetsch completed the 50-meter freestyle in 29.28.

The Mowerson Meet concludes the Panthers' winter trip to Florida, which runs through Jan. 11. Milwaukee returns to action at Valparaiso o Jan. 16 in a dual meet.
