Panthers Receiving Votes In Final Soccer Buzz National Poll

UWM finishes season in magazine poll for first time

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Dec. 12, 2005) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team, coming off arguably the best season in program history, is listed as receiving votes in the Soccer Buzz National Poll, the internet magazine announced over the weekend. It is the first time the Panthers have finished a season in the magazine's national poll.

The Panthers also finished fourth in the Great Lakes Region Poll, believed to be its highest regional ranking from Soccer Buzz in the magazine's history. 2005 opponents Marquette (No. 13), Illinois (No. 20) and Florida (No. 25) finished in the rankings, while Wisconsin was also receiving votes.

In the region, UWM finished ranked behind No. 6 Notre Dame, Marquette and Illinois, while the Badgers were listed at No. 5.

Final Soccer Buzz National and Regional Rankings

Milwaukee finished its season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, falling to No. 17 Marquette on a goal with 20 seconds remaining in regulation. It was the team's first trip to the second round in four NCAA Tournament trips. The Panthers advanced through the first round, defeating Purdue in a penalty kick shootout, 6-5. The two teams had played to a scoreless draw through regulation and two overtime periods.

UWM posted a 12-5-5 record this season and won both the Horizon League regular season and tournament titles. It was the sixth-straight regular season crown for the Panthers. The team was among the stingiest in school history, tying a school record with 13 shutouts and posting a 0.60 goals against average, second-best in school history.

Freshman Erin Kane led a number of players honored this season, earning all-league first team honors and being named league tournament MVP. She set a league and school record with 13 shutouts, while maintaining a school-record 0.58 GAA.

Sophomore Ginny Graczyk and freshman Sarah Teegarden also earned first team honors, while senior Janice McGann and sophomore Amanda Winn were selected to the second team. Graczyk, McGann and Winn formed three-fourths of the Panthers' record-setting defense in front of Kane. Kane, Graczyk, Teegarden and Winn highlight a list of seven starters returning next season.
