MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Dec. 6, 2007) - Senior Joanna Severson and junior Erin Kane of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team were named to the Horizon League Academic All-League Team, the league office announced today. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) also announced the recipients of the Team Academic Awards this week, which the Panthers received for the fifth-straight season. Both Severson and Kane were honored for their combination of academic and athletic success, being named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team. It was the second-straight season winning the award for Severson. Severson split time between the midfield and defense this season, tallying three goals on the year. She also contributed to a Panther defense that spent much of the season among the national leaders in most statistical categories. Severson is an accounting/finance major and boasts a 3.92 grade point average. Kane was named to the all-league first team for the third-straight season after starting all 21 games in goal for Milwaukee. She posted a 13-4-4 record and 0.73 goals against average. She also tallied 10 solo shutouts and combined on another, pushing her already school and league record career total to 36. She also set the school record for career wins by a goalkeeper (38) and surpassed the mark for goalkeeper minutes played in a career. Kane is a pre-veterinary major and has a 3.352 GPA. As a team, the Panthers boast team GPA of 3.38. They have won the award, which is given to teams with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better, in 10 of the last 11 seasons.
