UWM Struck By a Familiar Disappointment
Nov. 8, 2000
MILWAUKEE-The UWM women's team relived a familiar unpleasantry as they lost to Wright State in the MCC Tournament for the third consecutive year. The first-seeded Panthers (6-1 MCC, 11-8-1 overall) were defeated by the third-seeded host Raiders, 1-0, in the conference championship game on Sunday in Dayton, Ohio. UWM dominated its MCC rival again, outshooting the Raiders, 18-7, and allowing only one second-half shot. The Panthers created numerous chances to score, recording the 7-0 advantage in corner kicks and forcing Wright State goalkeeper Randi Freeman to make 10 saves. Three of UWM's shots-on-goal were cleared off the line by the Raiders' defense with another shot hitting the cross bar.
Wright State scored with less than a minute to end the first half when junior forward Sharon Roscoe finished a rebounder into the back of the net past UWM goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin (Sterling Heights, Mich./Utica). With Sunday's victory over the Panthers, Wright State advances to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year. The Raiders advanced on penalty kicks over UWM last year, and knocked the Panthers out in the first round on penalty kicks in 1998. ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM-Four Panthers were named to the MCC All-Tournament team: Senior defender Fanta Cooper (Oklahoma City, Okla./Westmore), junior midfielder Erin Blaedow (West Allis, Wis./Central), senior defender/midfielder Katie Waltenberger (Racine, Wis./Horlick), and sophomore forward Kristin Munyon (Omaha, Neb./Burke). Wright State's Freeman was named the tournament MVP. POST-SEASON AWARDS-UWM swept the MCC post-season awards as several players were recognized in every MCC category. Leading the list of Panthers, Cooper was named Co-Player of the Year along with Kara Bryan of Butler. Freshman forward Lisa Bengtsson (Uppsala, Sweden) was named Co-Newcomer of the Year, as was UW-Green Bay's Kristin Lau. UWM coach Michael Moynihan was named Co-Coach of the Year along with Detroit's Mike Lupenec. Cooper received the award for the second year in a row after being named last year's sole MCC Player of the Conference. This is also the second Coach of the Year award for Moynihan, as he was honored during the 1997 campaign. Blaedow, Cooper, and Munyon were all selected to the All-Conference first team while senior midfielder Lindsey Munkwitz (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial), Lisa Bengtsson, and Kerri St. Aubin made the second team. Bengtsson and Keri St. Aubin were both also selected to the MCC All-Newcomer team. LEADING THE MCC-UWM finished the season leading the MCC in shots (314, 15.70/game), fewest goals allowed (27, 1.35/game), shutouts (6, 0.30/game), and corner kicks (104, 5.20/game). The Panthers also finished second in points (101, 5.05/game) and tied for second in assists (27, 1.35/game).
Individually, St. Aubin led all conference goalkeepers in GAA (0.85), and was second in shutouts (4, 0.33/game). Munyon finished atop the leaderboard in shots (64, 3.20/game), tied for third in goals (9, 0.45/game), and tied for fourth in points (21, 1.05/game).
