The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team is facing Detroit this afternoon for the 2005 Horizon League Women's Soccer Championship.

The winner of the match receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

The match is scheduled to kickoff at noon in Green Bay, and uwmpanthers.com will be providing updates throughout the match.

UWM is looking to return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003. The Panthers, who won the league regular season title, lost to Detroit in last year's title game.

11:50 a.m.

The rains that were in the Green Bay area Saturday and overnight have cleared, leaving overcast skies and temperatures in the 40's. The wind and wet field conditions could still be factors in the match.

12:02 p.m.

The match is underway on a wet field in Green Bay.

12:11 p.m.

Nine minutes into the match and neither team has had a great scoring opportunity. UWM does have two shots, while Detroit has the lone corner kick.

The field and weather conditions are playing a part in the match, with the field extremely slippery and the wind blowing across the field.

12:24 p.m.

The match has moved into the 24th minute with neither team holding a dominating edge and much of the play in the midfield. UWM holds a modest, 3-2 edge on shots while Detroit still has the only corner kick.

Sarah Teegarden had to leave the match earlier after being hit in the face with the ball, but she has since returned to the field.

12:35 p.m.

Under 10 minutes now remain in the first half. Detroit has generated two more corner kick opportunities, though nothing has developed from either chance. And, UWM has started to sustain the ball more on their offense end of the field, though the Panthers have been unable to maintain possession consistently in the attacking third. The field conditions are also making it hard for both teams to control the ball at times.

12:47 p.m.

The scoreless match has moved to halftime. UWM holds a 4-3 edge on shots, while Detroit holds a 3-2 edge on corners. Overall, the match has been even, with neither team generating a clear scoring opportunity.

With under three minutes left in the half, Detroit was awarded a free kick near the top of the box. But, after a touch restart, the shot toward goal went harmlessly wide right.

The match is shaping up similarly to the first meeting this season between the two schools. In that contest, UWM scored the lone goal in the second half to claim the win.

1:01 p.m.

The second half is now underway.

1:12 p.m.

Under 36 minutes remain in regulation play and neither team has generated a clear scoring opportunity. UWM has the only official shot of the second half.

1:22 p.m.

Now less than 28 minutes remain in regulation play in the scoreless match and it is looking more and more like one goal will be enough to win the league title. The Panthers hold a 7-5 edge on shots, though none of their second-half shots have been overly threatening. The slippery field continues to play a factor in the match.

1:36 p.m.

The match has moved into the 77th minute and remains scoreless. UWM has started pushing the offensive attack more, edging its lead in shots to 10-5. Nicole Motl does have three shots on goal for UWM.

1:49 p.m.

Less than four minutes remain in regulation play and the match remains scoreless. Both teams have been pushing their attack more late in the match. UWM generated the best scoring chance when a Sarah Teegarden shot from just inside the box sailed inches over the crossbar. UWM holds a 14-7 edge on shots, and has outshot Detroit, 10-4, in the second half.

1:55 p.m.

Regulation play has ended and the match is still scoreless. UWM holds a 15-7 edge in shots and corner kicks are even at 4-4. UWM did have a corner kick opportunity with 30 seconds remaining, but the kick went into the side of the net. The teams will now play two, 10-minute golden goal overtimes. Should the match remain tied after overtime, it would go to penalty kicks, something that has not happened in the championship match since 1999.

2:07 p.m.

Three minutes remain in the first overtime. UWM has the only official shot. Detroit did have a chance on a partial break, but defenders Ginny Graczyk and Rebecca Englund were able to corral the attack before it turned into a shot.

2:11 p.m.

The first overtime has finished without a goal. Detroit did have a free kick chance from about 40 yards away, but the serve into the box was knocked out of danger by the Panthers' defense.

2:20 p.m.

The match is still scoreless in the 108th minute. Much of the play has been in the midfield, though Amanda Winn did send a free kick right at Detroit keeper Katie Fortenberry from 25 yards out. Fortenberry has nine saves.

2:24 p.m.

The match is heading to penalty kicks. Through 110 minutes of soccer, UWM held a 19-8 edge on shots, including five from Nicole Motl and four from Amanda Winn. Erin Kane officially gets credit for her school-record 12th shutout after making three saves.

Each team will alternate through a series of five penalty kicks apiece. If there is no winner after those five kicks, the match will be decided by sudden death penalty kicks.

UWM last went to PKs last season, winning its league tournament semifinal match on kicks.
