Fanta Cooper Named MCC Player of the Year
Nov. 4, 1999 Milwaukee - Junior defender Fanta Cooper (Oklahoma City, Okla./ Westmoore) has been selected Midwestern Collegiate Conference Player of the Year, the conference office announced today. The Panthers’ top defender, Cooper helped lead UWM to six shutouts this season and a team goals against average of 1.19. On the offensive end, she scored the gamewinning goal against DePaul and added an assist against Arizona. She also scored the gamewinner against UWGB in the first round of the MCC Tournament on Nov. 4. This is her first Player of the Year award, and the first for a UWM player since Lisa Krzykowski in 1997. This is Cooper’s second consecutive All-MCC first team selection. As a freshman in 1997, Cooper was an All-MCC second team selection and All-Newcomer team selection. Five players were name to the All-MCC Second Team for the Panthers. Junior forward Stefanie Hosni (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) leads the team in scoring with 11 points (four goals, three assists) and started every game. A two-time All-MCC second team selection, junior midfielder Lindsey Munkwitz (Waukesha Wis./Catholic Memorial) scored one goal and added an assist this year. Junior forward Katie Waltenberger (Racine, Wis./Horlick) tallied 4 goals, 2 assists and 10 points for the team, including both Panther goals in a 2-1 win over Oakland. Senior Liz Ulicki (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) has played every minute in goal for UWM this year. Her shutout against UWGB in the first round of the MCC Tournament on Nov. 4 was her eighth of the year. Senior defender Joanne Wilde (New Berlin, Wis./Catholic Memorial) played outstanding on the defensive end of the field and earned her first All-MCC honor. Two freshmen were named to the league’s All-Newcomer team: Katie Kubacki (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) and Kristin Munyon (Omaha, Neb./Burke). Kubacki scored one goal and had three assists in her first season. Munyon was an integral part of the Panther defense and scored one goal in her rookie season.
