Horizon League Awards Release

GREEN BAY, Wis. (Nov. 2, 2005)--Six members of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team earned honors when the Horizon League announced its post-season awards at the annual league tournament banquet, Wednesday night in Green Bay, Wis.

Sophomore Ginny Graczyk headed the list, repeating as an all-league first-team honoree, while she was joined on the first team by freshmen Sarah Teegarden and Erin Kane. Senior Janice McGann and sophomore Amanda Winn earned second team honors, while Teegarden, Kane and senior Kitty Montgomery were selected to the all-newcomer team.

UW-Green Bay's Sarah Oligney was named the League Player of the Year, while Detroit's Mike Lupenec was named Coach of the Year and Jess Rooma from Wright State was Newcomer of the Year.

Graczyk, McGann and Winn form three quarters of the Milwaukee defense in front of goalkeeper Erin Kane. The group has contributed to a team goals against average of 0.73 on the year, with that figure dropping to 0.42 in seven league matches. Graczyk and McGann have started all 17 matches this season, while Winn has started the last 14 after missing the first three with an injury.

Teegarden finished the regular season as UWM's leading scorer, tallying five goals and an assist for 11 points from her midfield position. Against league foes, she scored seven points on three goals and an assist, including the game-winner at Detroit that clinched the regular season title. She is tied for the team lead with two game-winning scores and is third in shots. Teegarden has started all 17 games this season and was named League Player of the Week Oct. 17.

Kane became the first freshman since 1995 to start the season-opener for the Panthers and has assaulted the UWM record books in 16 starts this season. She set a school mark with nine shutouts during the regular season and has boasted a 0.72 GAA and 9-4-3 record. Her GAA dips to a scant 0.32 in league play, where she blanked four opponents and saved 87.5 percent of shots faced. She leads the league in shutouts, GAA and is second in save percentage (.812). League Player of the Week a league-high three times, she has eclipsed school freshman records for starts, minutes and wins while more than doubling the previous standard for shutouts (4).

Montgomery lands on the Horizon League All-Newcomer team as a senior after transfering from the University of Iowa. She started the first 16 games of the season in the midfield before suffering a knee injury. Montgomery scored a goal on the year, while contributing to the vaunted Milwaukee defense.

The 2003 Horizon League Newcomer of the Year, Graczyk was an all-league first team honoree as a freshman before missing last season with a knee injury. McGann was named to the first team in 2004 and this is the first league honor for Winn. Kane is the fifth UWM keeper, and second freshman, to be named to the first team. She also joins Teegarden in becoming the third and fourth Panther freshmen named to the all-league first team.

Milwaukee is in Green Bay for the 2005 Horizon League Tournament. The top-seeded Panthers open the tourney Thursday against No. 8 Cleveland State. The winner moves on to the semifinals against the winner of No. 4 Wright State/No. 5 Butler Friday at 4:30 p.m. while the championship game is scheduled for Sunday at noon.
