UWM (10-7-1) Victorious In Overtime To Remain Perfect In MCC Regular Season
Oct. 31, 2000 MILWAUKEE--Capturing their first-ever perfect MCC record, the UWM women's soccer team came back in dramatic fashion from a two-goal deficit to defeat Loyola in overtime. The Panthers' 3-2 victory over the Ramblers lifted their conference record to 5-0 on the season, and 10-7-1 overall. UWM's Omaha-connection provided the winning goal at the 95:13 mark in overtime. The play began when sophomore Kristin Munyon (Omaha, Neb./Burke) flicked-on a free kick from the left side into the box. Sophomore midfielder Emily Jessen (Omaha, Neb./Marion) brought it down from the far post to leave for junior Julie Ruma (Omaha, Neb./Marion), who finished into the back of Loyola's net. Junior Erin Blaedow (West Allis, Wis./Central) scored first for the Panthers in the 66th minute off an assist from Munyon. Munyon scored the equalizer off a Jessen corner kick in the 77th minute. 1.00 IN THE MCC With Friday night's win over Loyola, the Panthers earned a perfect 5-0 record on the regular MCC season, a first in program history. The Panthers' best conference finish was during the 1997 campaign with a 4-0-1 record. They advanced to the NCAA Tournament that year. FIRST SEED IN THE TOURNEY After clinching first place in MCC standings a few weeks ago, the Panthers have the luxury of entering the tournament, hosted by Wright State, on Friday in the semifinal round. They will play the winner of #4 Butler vs. #5 UW-Green Bay at 7:30 p.m. in Dayton, Ohio. Butler and Green Bay will face off on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in quarterfinal match-up. Fourth-seed Butler posts a 2-2-1 MCC record (6-10-2 overall), while fifth-seeded Green Bay is 1-4 in the conference (6-11 overall). The Bulldogs defeated the Phoenix already this season, posting a 2-0 win on October 13th in Green Bay. UWM looks forward to either opponent, as they recorded a 5-2 win against Green Bay on September 20th and a 2-0 victory over Butler on October 15th, both played at Engelmann Field. LEADING THE MCC UWM ranks first in the conference in goals allowed (26, 1.44/game), shutouts (5), and corner kicks (93, 5.17/game). The Panthers' powerful attack also shows as they lead in shots (284, 15.78/game). They are ranked second in assists (26, 1.44/game) and are tied for second in goals (36, 2.00/game).
Individually, freshman goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin (Sterling Heights, Mich./Utica) leads all MCC goalkeepers with a GAA of 1.05 and 3 shutouts (0.30/game), Munyon is ranked second in shots (54, 3/game), senior Lindsey Munkwitz (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) is tied for third in assists (5), and freshman Lisa Bengtsson (Uppsala, Sweden) is tied for sixth in goals (7) and ranks eighth in points (17). Munyon is tied for third in goals (8) and tied for fifth in points (20).
