Women's Soccer Hits the Road For A Pair Of League Matches
Oct. 17, 2001 MILWAUKEE -- The UWM women's soccer team (9-3, 3-0) will hit the road this weekend for a pair of league matches with Detroit and Butler. The Panthers will play Detroit on Friday at 2:00 p.m. before traveling to Indianapolis for a noon contest with Butler on Sunday. Both Detroit and Butler are tied for second in the league with a 2-1 record. Milwaukee is coming off of last week's split result with the Big Ten, posting a 2-0 win at Wisconsin on Wednesday and a 2-1 loss to Northwestern on Sunday. The Panthers tied a school record of nine consecutive wins with the victory over the Badgers. The win was also Milwaukee's first win ever over Wisconsin. Detroit (4-7, 2-1 Horizon League) has won three straight games, with all three coming in shutouts. Over the weekend, the Titans defeated Butler and IUPUI by 2-0 scores. Butler (9-4, 2-1 Horizon League) fell into a second place tie in the league standings with Detroit after falling to the Titans on Friday, 2-0. The Panthers have won eight straight regular season league games dating back to the 1999 season. Last season UWM beat both Butler and Detroit in Milwaukee with 2-0 scores. Milwaukee holds the all-time series edge against both teams, posting a 6-5-2 all-time record against Butler and a 5-4 record against Detroit. UWM Recap * UWM went 1-1 against the Big Ten last week, bringing their season record against the conference up to 1-2. Milwaukee will be looking to even their record when they close out October at Minnesota. * Against Wisconsin on Wednesday, Evann Franklin scored the game winner unassisted in the 75th minute and added an insurance goal in the 88th minute off a double assist from Amy Ochsner and Alexa Torres. * Down 1-0 against Northwestern on Sunday, Lisa Bengtsson scored the equalizer in the 64th minute. A late goal by the Wildcats sent the Panthers to their first defeat in 10 matches. UWM (9-3, 3-0 Horizon League) Game Notes * The Panthers' points are well-rounded, as 17 players have contributed to UWM's attack. 13 players have scored at least one goal, while four others have added assists. * Amy Oechsner leads UWM in scoring with 16 points, tallying five goals and six assists. Erin Blaedow is second on the team with 13 points (6g, 1a), while Evann Franklin is third with eight points (4g). * UWM has outscored its opponents, 27-10, and has outshot them, 199-112. * Sophomore goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin has started every game for UWM so far this season, posting a 9-3 record and 0.82 GAA. St. Aubin, who has 39 saves on the season, has split time with junior Mary Duffy, who has a 0.88 GAA in 205 minutes of action. UWM has recorded seven shutouts on the season, with St. Aubin receiving credit for the shutout at Wisconsin. Both St. Aubin and Duffy have split time in the previous six shutouts. Moynihan Captures 50 UWM coach Michael Moynihan captured his 50th career win on Sept. 28 when the Panthers defeated Illinois State, 2-1. Moynihan's milestone came in his fifth year as head coach of the Panthers, and now he now holds a 54-27-11 record overall. In The League UWM's three league games this season all have come as shutouts. UWM beat Green Bay, Wright State and Youngstown State by a combined score of 9-0. Last season, the Panthers were undefeated in the league and outscored their opponents, 14-4, while tallying three shutouts. Nine Straight With their 2-1 loss to Northwestern on Sunday, the Panthers failed in their bid for the first 10-game winning streak in school history. UWM rebounded after a 0-2 start to rattle off nine straight wins. The last time Milwaukee won nine straight was the 1994 season, when the team finished 12-7-1. Detroit (4-7, 2-1 Horizon League) Game Notes * After a 1-7 start, the Titans have posted three consecutive shutouts, including two over league opponents. In Detroit's 2-0 win over IUPUI on Sunday, second half goals by freshmen Mandi Jasky and Bianca Savarino led to the 2-0 outcome. * Gwen Kilfoy, the Titan's leading scorer in 2000, leads the team in scoring with nine points (4g, 1a). Stacey Westbrook is second in the team in scoring with five points (1g, 3a), while five players have four points. * After being outscored 24-7 and outshot 131-64 in their first eight games, Detroit has outscored opponents 7-0 and outshot them 40-27 over the last three games. * Freshman Alisson Dube' has played every minute in goal for the Titans this season. After 11 games, Dube' is 4-7 with a 2.11 GAA. Dube' also hasn't allowed a goal in her last 282 minutes and was named the Horizon League Player of the Week on Monday. Butler (9-4, 2-1 Horizon League) Game Notes * The Bulldogs are coming off a 2-0 loss at the hands of Detroit on Sunday. The Bulldogs fell to 9-4 and 2-4 at home. * Amy Morrison leads the Horizon League in scoring with 29 points (9g, 11a) and has figured in 20 of Butler's 29 goals this season. Martha Gudiel is second on the team, and is tied for second in the league, with 21 points (9g, 3a). * Amber Stauch has seen most of the minutes in the net for the Bulldogs posting a 8-4 record with a 1.03 GAA and four shutouts. Stauch's GAA is third in the league behind Milwaukee's St. Aubin (0.82) and Duffy (0.88). Climbing The Ladder * Amy Oechsner's three assists at Valparaiso was the highest single-game total since 1997. Danielle Alberg tallied five assists and Lindsey Munkwitz recorded four against Western Illinois on Sept. 5, 1997. Oechsner's three assists put her fourth in the record book for single-game assists. * With her goal scored just 49 seconds into UWM's match against Valparaiso, Megan Mann etched her named into the Panther record book as well. Her goal was the third fastest goal scored in school history. Katie Waltenberger scored a goal at the 0:26 mark against Loyola on Oct. 27, 1998, to set the school mark. Entering the 2001 Season The Panthers entered the season favored to win the Horizon League title after winning the regular-season championship last year with an undefeated record (5-0). The Panthers finished 2000 on the cusp of the NCAA Tournament, losing 1-0 to Wright State in the league championship game. * League Co-Coach of the Year Michael Moynihan returns seven starters from a year ago, including first team all-league selection Erin Blaedow and Co-Newcomer of the Year Lisa Bengtsson, who is the team's returning leading scorer (17 points). Goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin returns to the squad after being selected to the all-newcomer and all-second team as a freshman. St. Aubin posted a 0.93 GAA, recording four shutouts and only allowing nine goals. Coach Michael Moynihan Moynihan is in his fifth year at the helm of the Panthers, and currently boasts a 54-27-11 career record after Sunday's loss to Northwestern. His career winning percentage of .647 is best in the program's history. Last season, he guided UWM to its first-ever regular-season league championship and was named MCC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career. Moynihan also won the coaching award in 1997, his first year as head coach, when his team won the league tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever in program's history.
A Milwaukee-area native, Moynihan graduated from Wisconsin where he was a four-year letterwinner on the Badgers soccer team.
