Friday's Conference Win Puts UWM On Top Of MCC With 3-0 Record

MILWAUKEE--The UWM women's soccer team scored two second-half goals to battle MCC-foe Detroit to a 2-0 victory on Friday afternoon at Engelmann Field. The Panthers shut out their second straight conference victim to post a 3-0 record in the MCC and a 7-5-1 record overall. Sophomore midfielder Katie Kubacki (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) scored UWM's first goal with just 29 seconds into the second half to take the 1-0 lead. Late in the game, freshman forward Lisa Bengtsson (Uppsala, Sweden) scored her seventh goal on the season off an assist from senior defender Fanta Cooper (Oklahoma City, Okla./Westmoore) to seal the game. Cooper Named MCC Player Of The Week For the second straight week, a UWM player has been recognized for her outstanding performance in the conference as defender Fanta Cooper was named Brine MCC Player of the Week. Sophomore forward Kristin Munyon (Omaha, Neb./Burke) was the previous recipient. Cooper has been a force in the back, anchoring a Panther defense that has consecutively shut out its last two MCC opponents. Her skill, speed, and overall presence has allowed her to dominate the backfield, while fueling momentum to push forward and counterattack. She demonstrated that ability with her assist in Friday's game while grabbing her first point on the season. Panther's Attack and Stellar Defense Show In Conference Stats * UWM leads MCC in shots (223) and corner kicks (70). * Panthers rank second in goals (27), assists (17), and points (73). * Bengtsson is tied for third in goals scored (7), while Munyon is fourth (6). * Munkwitz is tied for third in assists (4). * UWM leads MCC in shutouts (3) and in least number of goals allowed (19, 1.46/game) * Freshman goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin ( Sterling Heights, Mich./Utica) is tied for first in shutouts (2) and is second in GAA (0.65). UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: MINNESOTA AND BUTLER UWM travels to Minnesota on Friday as they take on the Golden Gophers in Minneapolis at 7 p.m. They return to Engelmann Field for their last home game of the season as they host Butler in an MCC match-up on Sunday at 10 a.m. The Gophers (6-6) are riding a three-game winning streak coming into Friday's match. With their 1-0 victory over Indiana last Sunday, Minnesota has shutout their last three consecutive conference opponents, giving them fourth place in the Big Ten. Senior forward Laurie Seidl leads the Golden Gophers in scoring by tallying four goals and two assists on the season. Minnesota leads the series, 4-0-1.
Butler (4-5-1) lost its last game, 1-0, on October 1st in a conference match against Detroit. The Bulldogs host Cincinnati tonight and travel to UW-Green Bay on Friday before playing the Panthers on Sunday. Butler's Amy Morrison ranks second in the MCC in points per game with 1.50 (6 goals, 3 assists, 15 points). She is tied for fourth in goals with UWM's Munyon (6). Butler leads the series 5-4-2, but UWM beat the Bulldogs, 4-1, in the MCC tournament semifinal last season.
