(June 2, 2008) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team will celebrate 25 years of soccer throughout the 2008 season, head coach Michael Moynihan announced today. "This will be an exciting season for us, one of celebration," Moynihan said. "To see women's soccer at the collegiate level from when this program began to where it is now is remarkable. As the women's soccer has grown, our program has developed into a perennial power inside the region and a team to be reckoned with in the NCAA Tournament." Milwaukee's women's soccer program achieved varsity status in 1984 and this season will mark its 25th season of competition. The program will have a handful of events and promotions to celebrate the season, including selecting the 25th Anniversary Starting 11, greatest team in school history and the greatest game. "We've had a lot of phenomenal players in the first 24 years that have each contributed to what we have here at Milwaukee," Moynihan said. "This season will be a celebration of all of our former players, coaches and supporters that have made our successes possible." Alumni are encouraged to vote on each of the three honors as they become available. The Starting 11 is open to alumni voting throughout the month of June. The top 26 were selected on honors and standing in the school record books. All eligible players also have to have played at least three seasons in a Panther uniform. Former players and staff members of the program are encouraged to visit the 25th Anniversary page and vote on one goalkeeper and three forwards, midfielders and defenders. One more field player is also selected. Members of the 26-player list are eligible, with the possibility of up to one write-in vote.
The 26-players will be honored at UWM's annual alumni game Aug. 16. The Starting 11 will be announced and honored before the Panthers' Aug. 22 game against Wisconsin. For a complete list of eligible players, see below. Milwaukee will also take time to honor the greatest team in program history, as well as the greatest game. Teams and games were selected by the celebration's committee and will be announced throughout the summer. Voting for the teams will take place in July and be announced at halftime of UWM's game against Detroit on Oct. 24. Meanwhile, the top game in team history will be voted upon in August. The top 10 games will be counted down throughout the season at every Panther home game, with the number one game being announced at halftime of the regular season finale against Valparaiso, Oct. 26.
