MILWAUKEE - Three NCAA Tournament participants, three tournament champions, and seven teams from the Big Ten and Southeastern Conferences highlight the 2001 UWM women's soccer schedule, released today by UWM coach Michael Moynihan.

In-state rivals Wisconsin and No. 24 Marquette, both NCAA Tournament teams a year ago, will face the Panthers in early October. UWM hosts the Golden Eagles on the 2nd and travel to Madison for a match-up with the Badgers on the 10th.

Vanderbilt makes its first appearance on a UWM soccer schedule at the Tennessee Invitational. The Panthers will face-off with the Commodores, as well as host Tennessee, in mid-September. UWM defeated the Volunteers 3-0 in in the Milwaukee Tournament a year ago. Arkansas and IUPU-Fort Wayne will meet UWM for the first time.

The Panthers will split hosting duties in the MCC this year, hosting three of their six conference games. With the addition of the Youngstown State to the MCC, the Panthers will play six conference games for the first time since the 1996 season. They will play the Penguins for the first time ever, as Youngstown joins the league after leaving the Mid-Continent Conference.

Regular season and tournament champion Oakland will make a visit to Milwaukee and take part in the Verizon Wireless Invitational, along with the Big Ten's Iowa. The Panthers defeated Oakland, 2-1, in OT last year. UWM will hit the road to face another Mid-Con team when they meet Valparaiso for a mid-September matinee. UWM is a combined 9-0 against Oakland, Iowa and Valpo in the program's history.

Rounding out UWM's non-conference schedule are home games against Northwestern and Central Michigan, and trips to Illinois State and Minnesota, where the Panthers will try to beat the Gophers for the first time ever.

The Panthers are coming off a season in which they won their second regular-season MCC Championship and swept their conference schedule for the first time ever. UWM also placed three players on the All-MCC first team, and two players on both the All-MCC second team and all-newcomer team. The Panthers have an all-time record of 53-42-13 against their 2001 opponents, and post a 9-3 record from games played against them last season. UWM hopes for similar success as they open up the 2001 season on August 31.
