Women's Soccer Ends Spring Season With A Win And A Loss Over Weekend
May 1, 2002
MILWAUKEE - The UWM women's soccer team defeated UW-Green Bay, 3-0, and lost to host Marquette, 5-1, Saturday at Valley Fields in Milwaukee. The scrimmages were played with 40-minute halves in the wet, windy and cold conditions. Freshman defender Sara Lewis scored the gamewinner against UW-Green Bay, while junior forward Sommer Rouse added a pair for insurance. Lewis returned to the Panthers' lineup after having missed several matches due to injury, as well as teammates Amber Jelinek and Carrie Durand. "Overall, it was a decent game despite the conditions," UWM coach Michael Moynihan said. "We were not as composed on the field as we had been the last few games, but we still managed to dominate the match. I was especially pleased with our involvement of the outside backs in the attack, though there were concerns with chances we gave up that were uncharacteristic of our defense. Green Bay played hard and countered quickly, and almost capitalized on a few opportunities." The win over Green Bay gave UWM its fifth consecutive shutout of the spring season, but Marquette drained the Panthers' defense with five goals-including four in the first half. Freshman Laura Driscoll added a goal for UWM in the second half. "This was a tough game, but a good learning experience," Moynihan said. "We started the game determined to play more composed than we had against Green Bay, and I think we did for the first 20 minutes. We talked with our backs about holding our line too aggressively when we don't have pressure on the ball, and Marquette killed us because of it. I think they had five shots in the first half and four of them were goals." Midfielder Katie Kubacki remained out of the lineup, and UWM's defense played without starting central back Maggie Suminski.
"Though it's not an ideal way to end the spring season, I am extremely pleased with the progress we've made," Moynihan said. "We are miles ahead of where we began this spring. Overall, I think we played very attractive soccer and we have a lot to look forward to next fall. Our players worked harder on their individual skills than ever before, and their improvement definitely showed with their comfort on the ball. Holding on the ball better has also allowed us to make more progress tactically. Right now, our team is leaving the spring season excited. They want to keep playing. They are enjoying the game and seeing the fruits of their labors, and are excited about the prospects for next year."
