Panthers Pick Up Win, Tie In First Action Of The Spring Season

Vraney, Shipway supply offense for Milwaukee in season openers

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (March 31, 2008) - Senior Pam Shipway and sophomore Louise Vraney each scored goals to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Loyola and a 1-1 draw with cross-town rival Marquette last Saturday at MU's Valley Field.

The matches were Milwaukee's first of the spring season.

"Overall, it was a good outing for us," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "It was the first time we played outdoor this spring. We haven't even had a chance to train outdoors yet. We've got some things to sort out regarding team shape, but that is to be expected at this stage of the season. We had some great combination play and some great moments. We were also able play around a bit and try some people in new positions, and there were some very encouraging signs."

The Panthers and Golden Eagles squared off first, with Milwaukee taking an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Shipway. Sophomore Andrea Wisniewski served the ball to her senior teammate to pick up the assist. Marquette countered in the closing minutes, deflecting a clear attempt into UWM's defensive zone. A player ran on to the loose ball and converted for the tying score.

Against Loyola, Vraney provided all of the scoring in a game where Milwaukee forced numerous scoring chances.

"We had an excellent first half and created numerous chances," Moynihan said, "but we just failed to finish."

Junior Erin Kane played the first half against Marquette and the second half against the Ramblers, making all the necessary saves to maintain a clean sheet for the day. Sophomore Leslie Deebach started the Loyola match and played the second half against MU. She conceded just the one score against a pair of prolific offenses.

The spring slate continues for the Panthers as they travel to Missouri April 4-5 for games with Saint Louis and nationally-ranked Missouri.
