Panther Women's Soccer Signs Five For 2006MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Feb. 2, 2006) - University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer head coach Michael Moynihan has announced the signing of five high school seniors to National Letters of Intent today, the second day of the early signing period for women's soccer. Leslie Deebach, Erin Kreuser, Kayla DeJardin, Louise Vraney and Carly Chertos have all committed to attend UWM in the fall and play soccer. Kreuser, DeJardin and Vraney are all from the FC Milwaukee club team that won state cups in 2005 and 2006. Deebach comes to Milwaukee from Woodbury, Minn., where she starred in goal for Woodbury High School. In three years of high school, she led her team to the state championship game each year, posted 50 shutouts in 68 games and had a 0.38 goals against average. The Royals won state titles in her sophomore and junior years, while she earned all-state honors and state all-tournament team honors twice each and was a three-time all-conference selection. "Leslie is a phenomonal goalkeeper that we are excited to have," Moynihan said. "Erin Kane came off a great year, but she will be challenged by Leslie for time. She is good with her feet and has a tremendous work rate." Kreuser is preparing for her senior season at nearby West Allis Hale High School. A midfielder/forward, she was named all-state as a junior and has earned all-conference honors in each of her first three seasons, including first-team honors her last two. In two-plus seasons at Hale, she has scored 34 goals with nine assists, including 19 goals and six assists as a sophomore. As a junior, Kreuser suffered a knee injury after scoring five goals in two games. "In the area, Erin is probably the player with the most collegiate potential," Moynihan said. "Unfortunately, she is coming off back-to-back knee injuries and is just now getting back to playing premier-level soccer. She is fast, quick and strikes the ball well. With her, it will just be a matter of experience." A product of Pulaski High School in Oneida, Wis., DeJardin will bolster the Panthers in both the back line and midfield. She helped the Red Raiders to a conference title as a freshman and has been named all-conference in each of her first three seasons. Her last two, she has garnered all-area accolades, as well. For FC Milwaukee, DeJardin played primarily defender, but could see time in the midfield for UWM. "Kayla is one of the most eager and committed soccer players in the state," Moynihan said. "She plays for the top club team in the state at defender, but we could see her playing in the midfield for us. She has a great work ethic and is a good team player." A forward from DePere High School, Vraney is coming off a prolific junior year that saw her tally 27 goals and five assists in leading her team to a regional championship and a runner-up finish at sectionals. In each of her three seasons she was named to the all-conference first team, while adding all-area first team honors twice and one selection to the all-area second team. "Louise is also coming off a knee injury, but she will be another good goal-scorer for us," Moynihan said. "With the ball, she is a creative and skillful type. She also strikes the ball well with both feet and is a good 1v1 attacker. Louise plays very attractive soccer. Chertos is currently a midfielder at Fond du Lac High School. After playing as a stopper her freshman season, she emerged as a true goal-scorer, almost tripling her goal output as a sophomore, then doubling that as a junior. In three seasons, she has 47 goals and six assists for 100 points. Last season, she scored 28 goals in 27 games and added a pair of assists. She was also an all-conference selection her first two years and tied a state record with three goals in a state playoff game as a sophomore. "Cheryl has been a huge goal-scorer for Fond du Lac, averaging over a goal per game (as a junior)," Moynihan said. " She's an aggressive player, a gritty and hard-nosed goal-scorer. She's aggressive around the goal and has a good work rate."
The Panthers finished up one of the most successful seasons in school history in 2005, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Moynihan returns four all-league players, including juniors-to-be Ginny Graczyk (first team) and Amanda Winn (second team), as well as Sarah Teegarden and Erin Kane, who were all-league first team selections as freshmen last season.
