Cooper, Munkwitz to Play in All-Star Game
Jan. 24, 2000 MILWAUKEE - UWM junior midfielder Lindsey Munkwitz (Waukesha, Wis.-Catholic Memorial) and junior forward/defender Fanta Cooper (Oklahoma City, Okla./Westmoore) have been selected to play on a team of college all-stars that will play the U.S. women's national team in a charity game. The "Garrett Game," organized by U.S. team member Mia Hamm, will take place Feb. 11 at the Bradley Center during an extended halftime of the Milwaukee Wave game with proceeds going to cancer research. Cooper, who was named MCC Player of the Year at the end of the 1999 season, helped lead the Panthers to the championship game of the MCC Tournament last year. A two-time All-Region select, Cooper also plays on the U.S. Women's Region II team. Munkwitz is a two-time All-MCC second team selection and last season for the Panthers. She helped lead Waukesha Catholic Memorial to the 1996 state championship and has played club soccer with the Milwaukee Kickers Nationals. "We have built our team around local talent, so it's nice to have them play in this national event in front of family and friends," said UWM coach Michael Moynihan. "It's a great opportunity for them. Fanta is in the pool for the U.S. national 'B' team and Lindsey is consistently one of our top performers. It will be interesting to see how they match up against the U.S. team."
In the first "Garrett Game," held in 1997, UWM's Lisa Krzykowski and Josha Krueger participated. In the 1998 event, Molly Pape and Kathy Hoverman played.
