Panthers Win League Title, Head To NCAA TournamentNov. 6, 2005
GREEN BAY, Wis. - Tournament most valuable player Erin Kane's diving save of a Rachel Stesney try in the sudden-death portion of penalty kicks preserved the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's victory over Detroit in the championship match of the Horizon League Women's Soccer Tournament Sunday afternoon. After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer and a round of five penalty kicks couldn't decide the outcome, Bailey Briggs calmly slotted her sixth-round shot to the upper-left corner before Kane's diving save sent UWM back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2002. Kane recorded her Horizon League record 12th shutout in helping the Panthers avenge a loss to the Titans in last year's league title match. UWM will learn its NCAA Tournament site and opponent Monday at 4 p.m. when the pairings are announced live on ESPNNews. The team will gather in the Gasthaus in the UWM Union to view the show. More details will follow throughout the afternoon, including quotes and notes. For a running recap from the match and the shot-by-shot details of the penalty kick shootout, click the link below.
