UWM Women's Soccer Struck By A Familiar Disappointment
MILWAUKEE-The UWM women's soccer team relived a familiar unpleasantry as they lost to Wright State in the MCC Tournament for the third consecutive year. The first-seeded Panthers were defeated by the third-seeded host Raiders, 1-0, in the conference championship game on Sunday in Dayton, Ohio. They finish the season with a 6-1 MCC record and 11-8-1 overall record. "I'm proud of the effort we had," said UWM coach Michael Moynihan. "But it's disappointing to see a soccer game end like that when we play attractive, hard-fought soccer and the other style soccer seems to win." UWM dominated its MCC rival again, outshooting the Raiders 18-7 and allowing only one second-half shot. The Panthers created numerous chances to score, recording the advantage in corner kicks, 7-0, and forcing Wright State goalkeeper Randi Freeman to make 10 saves. Three of UWM's shots-on-goal were cleared off the goal line by Wright State's defense with another shot hitting the crossbar. Though the Panthers ruled the attack, the Raiders were able to capitalize on their limited opportunities with a goal in the first half. Wright State scored with less than a minute to end the first half when junior forward Sharon Roscoe finished a rebounder into the back of the net. UWM goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin made the initial save on a Raider shot, but Roscoe followed in the loose ball to put the Raiders up 1-0. Seniors defenders Fanta Cooper and Katie Waltenberger played well for the Panthers, each earning a place on the All-Tournament team. Sophomore forward Kristin Munyon, who led the Panthers with six shots, and junior midfielder Erin Blaedow were also recognized with the same honor. Wright State's Freeman was named the MCC Tournament MVP.
With Sunday's victory over the Panthers, Wright State advances to the NCAA Tournament for the third year in a row and will play Marquette in the opening round. The Raiders advanced on penalty kicks over UWM last year, and knocked the Panthers out in the first round on penalty kicks in 1998.
