Wright State Upsets UWM in First Round of MCC Tournament

Raiders outlast Panthers, advance on penalty kick shootout.

INDIANAPOLIS - Fifth-seeded Wright State advanced to the MCC womens soccer semifinals by defeating UW-Milwaukee in a penalty kick shootout, 5-3. The match was tied 0-0 after regulation play and two 15 minute overtimes.

After both teams made their first round penalty kicks, and Wright State made its second round kick, WSU freshman goalkeeper Randi Freeman (Cincinnati, Ohio) stopped the PK attempt of UW-Milwaukees Erin Blaedow. The Raiders then converted their final three penalty kicks to advance.

UW-Milwaukee outshot Wright State, 25-6, for the match, but Freeman made 10 saves to keep the game scoreless. UWM senior goalkeeper Kathy Hoverman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) made three saves for the Panthers.

Wright State (6-10-2) advances to play top-seeded Loyola (9-10-1) in the semifinals. UW-Milwaukee finishes its season 10-5-3.
