Panthers Picked Third In League Preseason Poll
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Oct. 8, 2008) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team has been picked third in the Horizon League preseason poll of league coaches, sports information directors and media, the league office announced today. The Panthers received two first-place votes and tallied 240 points, just one point back of second-place Wright State (241 points), which garnered one first-place vote. Two-time defending regular season champion Green Bay topped the list with 24 first-place votes and 284 total points. Milwaukee returns three starters and 12 letterwinners, including 2008 Horizon League Player of the Year Traci Edwards. League all-defensive selection Turquoise McCain also returns, as does starting point guard Jodie McClain. The Panthers went 17-14 last season and finished tied for second in the league The poll nearly mirrored the 2007-08 league finish, with Green Bay taking first and the Panthers and Raiders tying for second. Fourth, fifth and sixth places were each filled by the teams that finished them in 2008. Cleveland State (228 points), Butler (204) and Valparaiso (179) occupied those places. UIC (97), Loyola (94), Youngstown State (71) and Detroit (41) rounded out the poll. In addition to Green Bay, Milwaukee and WSU, Cleveland State, Butler and Loyola each received a first-place vote.
