MILWAUKEE - Much like the fall recruiting season, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball coach Sandy Botham used both Wisconsin and Illinois ties as her program signed two players to National Letters of Intent here this past week. Dana Schultz, a 6-0 forward from Newman High School in Wausau, Wis., and Kiley Johnson, a 5-9 guard from Prophetstown (Ill.) High School, joined four fall signees in giving the Panthers a balanced recruiting class.

Schultz will head downstate to Milwaukee after leading her Newman High School team to a 22-3 record and the semifinals of the Division III Wisconsin State Tournament this past March. A 6-0 center, Schultz led the Fighting Cardinals in scoring (16.0 ppg), rebounding (8.2 rpg), and field goal shooting (.612).

A three-time First-Team All-Marawood Conference performer, Schultz was named the 2002 League Player of the Year as well as garnering Associated Press Fourth-Team All-State honors. A Third-Team All-State honoree as a junior, Schultz is slated to play in the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association DIII All-Star game this summer.

"I saw Dana at the state tournament and she caught my eye with her court presence," coach Botham said. "She's a strong, physical post player who demands the ball. She is a very confident player with great character."

One of the top players in the northern Illinois region, Johnson helped lead Prophetstown High School to a "Sweet 16" appearance in the Illinois High School Association state tournament and a 29-2 overall record. Johnson ended her four-year career as the PHS career leader in points (1,635) and steals (452) while ranking fourth on the school's rebounding chart (541). The 5-9 guard averaged 18.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 6.2 steals this past season.

The 2002-03 Three Rivers Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Johnson also earned Class A Second-Team All-State honors by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. Furthermore, the versatile guard was named the Moline Dispatch and Rock Island Argus Player of the Year three years running while earning Quad City Times Player of the Year accolades in 2002-03.

"Kiley is just a tremdendous athlete who has a great understanding of the game," noted Botham. "She has the ability to knock down the three but one of her biggest strengths is her ability to attack the basket. Plus, she's always a step ahead of the game on the defensive end."

With the signing of Schultz and Johnson, UWM wrapped up a six-player recruiting class that includes fall signees Nicole Almberg (Oshkosh/West), Beth Reckelberg (Luxemburg-Casco), Aubrey Hampton (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) and Jessica Altieri (Linconshire, Ill./Stevenson).
